thanks, collegehalp. I wonder how the criteria Rugg’s uses differs from Gourman?

At first glance, it looks like Gourman reported only uni’s , but I see Swarthmore in its English list.

I notice, for example, Rugg had Lawrence for English, but Gourman did not. Also, Gourman has U IOwa for English, but Rugg did not.

The Gourman criteria favor research universities. The Rugg’s criteria favor LACs.

I don’t see Beloit on any of the lists for English. I thought I saw somewhere that it was a leading producer of English Phd’s ( I could be wrong - too much info!)

Also, for psyshcology, When I went to Lawrence, the admin tour person said that Lawrence recvd some kind of commendation or distinction from the American Psychology Assoc - or some such association. I just bobbed my head - the parent bobble head!

Maybe I will email him and get a specific association and the specific distinction.

collegehelp, are the above lists complete? I notice that for at least one of the categories you said ‘some’.

is there a link to this anywhere?

There is no link, only a book. From Rugg’s, I just picked out the LACs. Rugg’s also mentions some universities.

Oh man, this is so useful. Thanks so much, collegehelp!

how about econ?

Collegehelp,

Where is STANFORD? So the university that has won most Turing awards (‘Nobel prize’ in computing), has created most famous IT companies such as Yahoo, google, SUN, CISCO, and H-P, has created most world changing IT inventions, and has been always ranked #1 by US NEWS and national research council was NOT even on your list?

Gourman ranking really sucks.

Here is a more complete list from the Gourman Report. No, it doesn’t include Stanford. Interestingly, the Gourman GRADUATE edition has Stanford ranked #2 for Computer Science. A professor who got his PhD at Stanford once told me that Stanford is not necessarily the best place for undergraduate education. They place a very strong emphasis on their graduate programs. The high proportion of graduate students attests to this. Last year Stanford Comp Sci graduated 82 bachelors degrees and 182 graduate degrees. I think Gourman is saying that Stanford Comp Sci is not so great for undergrad Comp Sci. I have seen this with Caltech, too.

collegehelp,

collegehelp, could u post the econ rankings please?
