Rape, Sexual Assault, and Drug Use in Greek Life (the "Cornell 7" specifically, but also generally)

Cornell is not one of those schools that hand out A’s that easily.

There is a minimum GPA to join and stay in a fraternity. Thus, they don’t have any O.0s pulling the average down.

My comment wasn’t specific to Cornell. I was responding to the statement that “the GPAs of Greek members are usually higher than the average at most colleges.” And, as an aside, I don’t know if that assertion is true.

New article puts a new and distasteful spin on the UChicago assault.

The woman’s friends said that a group of men had tried to block them from entering the bathroom after the men were seen “cheering and appearing to encourage the activity inside,” according to the report.
The group, which consisted of as many as five men, initially told the woman’s friends she wasn’t inside the bathroom, the report says. When the two other women pushed forward, a man grabbed one of them by the hair as the other picked the bathroom lock, according to the report.
The 21-year-old woman was “not fully conscious” when she was found inside the bathroom, according to the report, which says she and the man were both partially undressed.
After one of the woman’s friends told him to get off her, “he responded that everything was ‘cool,’ as though nothing had occurred,” the report says.
When the woman and her friends confronted the man outside the fraternity house, one of the men said they “had identified the wrong person” and pointed the women in another direction and then ran off, according to the report.
One of the friends gave chase but stopped when she encountered a university police officer, the report says. A complaint was taken, and the 21-year-old was hospitalized.

And…

The university’s chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi said no one affiliated with the fraternity was “involved or complicit with this incident,” according to a statement it posted on Instagram.

Obviously, if the incident was in the fraternity house bathroom (as opposed to outside at the house), that makes things a lot worse for the chapter. The people in there should have been on the guest list, even if not otherwise affiliated with the university. It does appear from the article that the person of interest is known, but not (yet?) named because he was not (yet?) charged with a crime.

Great idea to be safer. https://www.facebook.com/reel/1098912436070261

That quote came directly from the Duke Chronicle. To your point there is still some semblance of Greek life but the larger, traditional IFC and Panhel went off campus, now known as Durham IFC and Durham Panhel.

Based on Duke Student Affairs , the only sororities or fraternities recognized as student groups by Duke are MGC (historically Latino, Asian, and Native American) and NPHC (historically Black) ones. None of the “traditional” (historically White) sororities or fraternities are currently recognized as student groups. All of the latter are listed as having disaffiliated in 2021, except for two fraternities that disaffiliated in 2022 and 2023.
