I put our 40" flat screen tv into the armoire, bc well, it fit, and I still like the look, and enjoy being able to still close the doors, and have technology not be the center of the family room. if it hadn’t fit, probably would have gone with a new pedestal, but I don’t feel like I need to move forward in every area of my life

I have a reverse question. We have plaster wall and I am hesitant to install the flat screen on the wall. I am considering to convert an open bookcase into a media cabinet. Any pitfalls you see?

At least half of my furniture IS my grandmother’s! But since virtually all of it is from the 19 century or 1920 at the latest, I guess I am safe from appearing faddish. (Everyone who remembers the fads in question is long gone. )

You actually have spare shelf space that is not overflowing with double shelved, or even quadruple shelved, books? I’m envious. One thing I always need more of is bookcases.

We never had a big tv, and so never had the armoire. Dodged that bullet, I guess. I have to say that I find it amusing that people are “repurposing” those armoires back into…armoires. At one point I recall the big thing was stripped old armoires from Europe, possibly because of lack of closet space in NYC apartments. They were very expensive. I would assume that those are worth keeping.

Good for you you have so many books. I was going to get a new bookcase to use for the TV. I have not found a better solution for TV.

I repurposed a piece of furniture to be a large bookcase, but now I wonder if one day large bookcases will be obsolete. I’ve moved to the kindle for anything except certain books (signed by authors, books with my ancestors’ writing in it, etc).

“I have a reverse question. We have plaster wall and I am hesitant to install the flat screen on the wall.”

Is there a reason you are hesitant?

My sister has plaster walls and just had a flat screen installed. There were no problems with the installation, other than it was expensive - but I believe that was due more to the pipes from the master bath behind the same wall.

Yes, I may like to move it around in the future and generally prefer not to disturb the wall.

We have a ton of books and a lot of them are technical and educational. I still have my textbooks from my college days and have been thinking of tossing or giving them away to anyone that wants them. Many of my technical books are probably obsolete now and I don’t know that we’ll ever need the K-12 curriculum sets that we used with our kids. I’m still cleaning out paper stuff so it would be a while before I’d get to thinning out our library but, yes, I’m headed in a similar direction on preferring electronic books over physical.

Igloo, gotcha.
