What level will she reach by the end of senior year?
I would think it’s the easiest major to get into, simply because there aren’t too many applicants and those who do all tend to be well-qualified.
@myos1634, you didn’t mention the major you are thinking about
I think her gpa could be a weighted 4.7 at the end of her senior year, if there are no more p/f semesters. (Projection would’ve been a 4.8 if the grades this semester counted toward the gpa). But if she’ll be applying in Aug. or Sept of 2021 (before senior year or right at the beginning of it), her gpa may only be a 4.5 by then(again because of the p/f happening right how). Her uw gpa is a 3.8 currently, and I think it’ll stay that way unless she aces her honors and APs coming up in the next 2 years. But a 3.8 is a safe bet.
They stop the GPA in June jr year but take classes into account throughout senior year.
Is she taking German 4 or 5/AP? Is she involved in language clubs?
(oops, I meant… level… in German! And thus meant the German major.)
She will have Honors German 4 next year, which will be her Junior year. Then she can decide if she wants to take Honors German 5 or AP German in her senior year (h.s. offers both). Yes, she is an active member of the German Club, and was supposed to do an exchange program this summer to Duren. That has been cancelled. Hoping the girl she was matched with from Germany can still come to stay with us in the fall.
So the German major is your best bet. How about your next choice in case my D decides not to full on major in German?
Global Studies, I think, would be the next.
But if she’s interested in these 4 majors, she can apply for German and if she changes her mind later on, she can switch for any other major, without any worry, at orientation or during freshman year since they’re in the same college.
Thank you so much, @MYOS1634 . I didn’t realize that.
@jlhpsu Not sure where to post this, but just read some highlights from the BOT meeting on 5/8.
A/o 5/8, total undergraduate applications are at 100,519 (a fraction smaller than last year - 0.3% smaller).
paid accepts: down 6.8%, but the deadline has been extended to June 1
- 5,800 requested an extension
- international applications are down 11%
- out-of-state are up 5%
- in-state are down 4% (all compared to last year)
Thanks for that information! Interesting numbers…not sure what to make of in state applications being down…
I am researching Penn State Engineering school at University Park. I am looking for GPA and SAT scores of admitted and attending students to the school of engineering to the class 2024. I find some wonderful profiles of admitted students, but cannot find profile of all students. Several websites publish stats, but they apply to the entire student body. I have the impression that the engineering school is more selective than the general student body.
@AbcPenn that is tough for class of 2024 as it is too new and profile of 2023 is on PSU website, but not specific to Engineering. I can only state my son (OOS Engineering University Park Campus Admit for class of 2024) was 4.2 wGPA (3.8 uwGPA), very strong class strength (AP and Honors), 1250 (SAT), Band, EC’s, Varsity Sports, etc.
Thank you! This is great to know! My son is applying this august, class of 2025 (well hopefully class of 2026 if he gets in and stays with Arch Eng. 5 yr prog). His stats after jr year are about the same as your son’s. We are all wondering if he should apply College of Eng, or better chance at DUS. He only wants UPark as his sister is there and he’s been visiting for years now. Engineering dept says apply directly, but of course they’ll say that :-). I was looking here for current acceptances. Thanks! (Is he starting in the fall in the dorms?)
My son knows the application opens August 1 this year. Please remind me- does that mean it’s the first time they can see it and start any input to it? or is it available at all before for the prompts and see what he needs for it? (already forgot as my daughter applied 3 years ago). Funny how I logged in today again and saw a lot of the same people providing information. I’d like the latest and greatest! thank you in advance!
The application opens on August 1 and that the first time you can see any of the required information needed. That said, Early Action deadline isn’t until Nov 1 so it won’t really matter when between Aug 1- Nov 1 or Aug 1-Nov 30 (priority deadline) that he applies. It is not first in, first out. Decisions are randomly released.
Thank you for the answers on the application, very helpful!
I know everyone is told that it’s not first in, first out-- but if they don’t have it, they can’t review it, right? That’s our thinking, and it held true to my JD and her friends 3 years ago when they all applied. She was first in, and definitely got an acceptance at least a month before them. She had her housing deposit in before they even got an answer. But guess it can go either way. That said, my son is submitting his application by next week, never really understand why students wait to begin with if it’s not an ED school. Thanks!
@onthesearch814 While it never hurts to get it in early, there are other factors that come into play:
- what college are they applying to? (Engineering might be reviewed before Smeal, for example)
- where are their stats in relation to the college? (different colleges are easier/more difficult to get into… where is the line drawn?)
- are there differences regionally? (OOS vs IS?)
So, while it should be simple - it isn’t always. But it can’t hurt to apply early ◡̈
Grateful to all the experienced Penn Staters on this forum! My son sent in his application but when I was just reviewing it (after he sent it in!) I see he put “undecided” as major but did not see where there was an option to select DUS (which was his intent). Does selecting undecided put you into consideration for DUS or was there somewhere else he was supposed to indicate that.
Also, he wanted to get his application in early to show how interested he is but he is now thinking of dropping one of the AP classes he already included on his self reporting grades. What do we do vis a vis his application? Thanks for any insight!
DUS is Penn State’s undecided major - so if he selected undecided, he effectively chose DUS. There is no other slot he would be put in. As far as change in schedule, I think Penn State understands that student’s schedules change. I would call admissions and ask their advice on whether they need to amend his application or not.
Thank you!! Your guidance on the PSU forum has been so helpful! Much appreciated.
@jlhpsu - Good afternoon! Wondering if you’re able to answer a question for me? Does Penn State require high school physics for admission into Eberly? I remember reading a post on one of these threads from someone who indicated Penn State looks for physics, but I cannot find that information on Penn States’s website - it just states 3 sciences. My daughter has Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Biochemistry and Honors Anatomy and Physiology. Do you feel this will be a problem for her?
Her WGPA is 100.007% UWGPA 94.7% with 8 Honors courses and 7 AP/IB/Dual enrollment. SAT 1330. In state.
Also, do you feel we made the right decision submitting her SAT? Thanks!
@ashley41 I don’t know the answer to the physics question. I will try to dig and find it.
Her stats are certainly strong. Since gpa is typically 2/3’s of the decision, I would think she is in good shape. No one really knows what will happen with SAT, but I would think it is in line with her stats. Again, I don’t know how Admissions is treating it this year, but if you have an SAT score that is respectable, I would think it is worth submitting, so I would have done the same.
good luck -
