Really disappointing and somewhat unexpected waitlist from UMichigan

UMich is rolling, right? Perhaps it’s because of that

“Do you personally know/ have heard of applicants like me getting waitlisted?”

Yes, someone with very similar stats. That person is very annoyed as well, but fortunately has fantastic opportunities elsewhere.

@MidwestDad3‌ Opportunities where?

A few thoughts…there are a ton of applicants with similar stats - that is not the only consideration. As they drill down further into what you want to study - the school, department, the program, the major, etc…, the region you come from, even the HS you attend, and whatever other filters they apply, they must have achieved the number “they” had as targets.

Don’t take it personally, you will never really know Move on and pick from the schools that accepted you.

OP, St. Andrews, Univ College London & Univ of Edinburgh are the ones I know of. I think maybe a likely letter from Dartmouth. Waiting on the Ivies.

Good luck to you. You’ll land at a great place.

New York is a huge city, but there are probably 30 to 40 somewhat distinct neighborhoods. Likewise, from the outside Michigan looks huge, but from the inside it is – with two exceptions – a series of pretty small colleges and schools.

While LS&A is pretty large, and engineering is also pretty large, the actual population of the other schools is rather small in each case and the rankings are sufficiently strong that admission to any of those colleges or schools is highly competitive…both in terms of the required metrics and in terms of the number of applicants.

LS&A and engineering are somewhat large neighborhoods, but admission is quite competitive (again…comparative metrics and number of applicants) and adcoms, as noted by others, look for genuine interest in Michigan. A last second application and/or sloppy essays by a highly qualified student may indicate that the student does not have a sincere interest in Michigan. If so, why would Michigan want to waste an offer on an applicant unlikely to hit campus? The cynical may call this “yield protection” or something similar but there is a pretty practical dimension: Michigan ranks VERY well in terms of freshman retention. The kids that attend largely love the place. Getting that degree of synchronicity somewhat depends on finding a mutual fit. The high retention rate suggests that Michigan handles the question of mutual “fit” with exceptional acuity.

Last thought: in part due to the common application, the number of applicants and the entering metrics are increasing each year. As has been noted by other posters, a number of kids that treat Michigan as a safety are in for a bit of a rude awakening.

Historically Michigan might have been a ‘safety’ of sorts, but it has not been that way for quite a number of years. I recall the surprises during my first son’s college application cycle in 2006-2007. Perhaps the out of state GCs are not as aware and encouraging applications as a “safe” bet for smart kids. I also heard from some friends with younger kids than mine that MSU filled up fast this year and there are some high stat kids that are waiting or deferred 'til spring because they applied late causing even in-state GCs to wring their hands. It’s alittle surprising because I thought the peak of college admissions age kids was a year or so ago.

“As has been noted by other posters, a number of kids that treat Michigan as a safety are in for a bit of a rude awakening.”

I hope high school counselors are taking note.

and too many smart kids from Long Island - Herricks, Syosset, Rockville Centre, Garden City and the elite Catholics apply to Michigan!

You seem very smart and qualified. They probably thought you were not interested in matriculating and rather using them as a safety school. Nonetheless, this is very odd and you should try appealing. What other schools did you get into?

My D accepted waitlist. We would not know until end of June. How does it affect acceptance to the other school since we have to decide by May 1.
Do I accept other school and tell them it is conditional? Please advise.

@kiwirocks No. You just pretend the waitlist as rejection and pick your best option among accepted schools. Even they said they will admit more students from the wait list this year, the chance is not likely to be a very high. In the past couple years, around 1/3 of the students offered waitlist chose to be on the waitlist. Of them, only around 2-3% admitted. If they do contact you in June and you accept the offer, then you notify the school you have put down the deposit to withdraw your enrollment. You will not get the deposit back but they know they know they don’t need to follow up with you for registration, orientation, and financial aids.
The fact that they give more hope on the waitlist admission this year, there may be more students want to be on the waitlist this year.
