Rebecca Black and "Friday"

^ Agreed. It looks like Stephen Colbert will come on the Jimmy Fallon show this Friday and sing her song.

I doubt Paris Hilton regrets taping that sex video or the fact that it was widely distributed.

I meant that, as a performer…she is a laughing stock. Not the first laughing stock to be on Leno. Not the last. She was not invited on because she amazed the world with her talent. She was invited on because she is a curiosity. You get the difference, right?

I understand that a lot of people, like Donald Trump, might say something along the lines of, “Any publicity is good publicity”, but that is only true in certain contexts. For those looking for their fifteen minutes, I guess her situation might be enviable. For someone hoping to be taken seriously as a performer, not so much. Still, at 13, I wouldn’t say her performing life is over, you know? Bad introduction to the biz, for sure, but with someone so young there just has to be the possibility of a second chance.

I predict she won’t need a second chance, because she’ll go straight to a Disney TV show. She may end up being a laughingstock in the same way Liberace was–you may know of his response when he was asked how he felt when people said he wasn’t a real pianist: “I cried all the way to the bank.”

LOL…I don’t know, Hunt. Liberace was actually playing the piano with with his own hands, so that analogy doesn’t really fit. He may not have been a great artist, but he was a great performer, and it was all him.

I will concede something to you. You definitely can be a founding member of the Rebecca Black fan club! Congratulations. :)

I guess I’m just part of the backlash.

But I wouldn’t pay money to download the song. It’s pretty awful.

I still say that the criticism is for all the wrong reasons. The lyrics are bad, but not just because they are uncool. Standing up in the back of a convertible on the highway, she sings “cruisin’ so fast on the highway.” And the rapper who appears in the video (and wrote the song and runs arkmusic) sings about switchin lanes, and getting angry because there’s a slow bus in front of him. That’s my objection. Other than this it would have been a harmless tune ( catchy if not being able to get it out of your head counts as catchy).

Incidentally, for those who thought she just fell off a turnip truck, here’s a little bit more about Rebecca (from the arkmusic site):

Ugh to the modeling management company.

But roshke, you *listened to the words *of this song, including the rap?

^^ No, just googled the lyrics!

Weird youtube video aside, this girl is a cute kid. I am sure we all wish her well (whether we ever hear about her again or not).

I thought of this thread today! I was on a college campus. Funny thing, but first ran into a bunch of middle school age kids there, who must have been on some sort of field trip. Later, ran into a whole lot of elementary aged kids, who must have also been to the college for some sort of trip. Walking by these young kids, one little girl was singing the Friday song to another girl and I laughed to myself. I also thought…UGH. I guess it is Friday, though, and it made sense! :)

PS, I have to say that the modeling management company thing in her bio, all fits this latest promotional music video the parents arranged hoping the D would “make it.” Sorry but it is a certain kind of family that goes that route in the profession. Their aim is to be “discovered.” I guess it worked for them.

I first Heard of the Friday song when my HS D sang in on a Friday. Her friend laughed and said “eeew, stop singing that!”. Then my college S came home for spring break and showed me the video. Ok, so it’s not great but my younger kids are the target audience and it worked. It reminded me of the song “Thank God it’s Friday” and subsequently “TGIF”. Every generation has it’s “Eeew” moments.

The Colbert/Fallon version…now I can’t get the darn song out of my head.

Hmmm…

$2,000 to make this video?

What happend to the other $1,975?

Love the Colbert/Fallon version. Taylor Hicks didn’t add anything but still better than the original.

The lead role in “Oklahoma” - that’s what I really can’t see. Based on the live performances, Colbert could do a better job.

cartera, it’s a middle school musical. Have you ever been to a middle school musical?

D is taking public speaking (her last “general education requirement”–waited 'til she was a senior—and said the class–2:00 MWF, so late for a Friday class) sings it every week. She told us she was calling her last speech (Dr. Suess…Fun Fun Fun Fun). That was the first I’d heard of the song, but now there’s this thread, Colbert, and lots of other references!
