"menloparkmom, I hear Los Altos High School, a public, is amazing. Academically on par with some of the hottest privates. Is that your impression as well? "

no, LAHS is not quite good as the PA’s 2 HS’s or privates on the Peninsula. close but but not quiet on par…
PA housing / land prices per sqw ft are higher than any other city on the Peninsula. They have a very rich Tax base to draw on- 2 HSs for a population of 76,000. plus nearly all of Stanford’s profs kids go to PA high schools, so that has quite an influence on the high levels of achievement and where graduates are accepted.

Dear all, thank you for all the suggestions.

Personally I do not agree with my sister’s plan. I don’t see the point of sending the kid to those pressure cooker schools (plus they are too expensive for my family to afford). I would rather my kids stay in local public high school and be the no. 1 there. But since they consider it as sacrifice for the family to breakup and stay in 2 places for several years for the child’s education, they want the best high school in return. I can not criticize their decision. All I can do is to help them and collect some information for them.

I will forward all your suggestions to her. Thanks again.

p.s. if you are wondering, yes, we are Chinese.

Make sure your sister understands how magnet schools and other selective publics work. Her best bet really will be private. Otherwise, she probably won’t meet residency requirements for the selective publics as well as qualifying dates, etc.

Don’t move to NJ. Even though we have top private (Hun, Peddie, Lawerenceville, Oak Knoll, Kent Place, Blair, etc… & public schools- Mt Lakes) top NJ students are too plentiful in the college admissions process. Being from NJ is a disadvantage…

If she is interested in the CA south bay area, she could try Bellarmine College Prep. It is a top private (not boarding) with a diverse population. Very competitive environment. There are other good privates in the bay area as well, and other publics outside of Palo Alto-- Los Gatos and Saratoga High Schools. Cupertino and Freemont public high schools are possibilities as well.
