Endicott College is right by the beach.
I would focus first on shadowing so that she knows whether she needs a school with a communication disorders major.

Carthage College is right on Lake Michigan, and their website puts the COA at just around $30k. It was one of two colleges I applied to back in the dark ages, and while I wound up at Hope on the other side of the lake, my college experience pretty much ticked all the boxes for her ideal college environment. If you want to explore some Great Lakes colleges, this could be worth a look.
Several in FL are on or near the water (Rollins, Eckerd, Flagler etc)
Salve Regina is in Newport…and yes, on a Rocky beach. It was our kid’s safety school. You would need to check the majors. I know they don’t have communication disorders.
She’s delightful --truly delightful with a big dose of her mother’s snark. I just want her to go to a place where she will be happy. She’s an explorer --and for her - Kansas is about as boring as it gets. Haha! But I also know she will make the best of where ever she lands.
It’s not Malibu, but Connecticut College, already on your list, is on the water (Thames River) and a 15-minute drive from Ocean Beach Park. You can also take the ferry from New London to Orient Point to enjoy the beaches of Long Island. It’s a beautiful ride on a nice day!
Ah -that’s very smart. I think she just wants ‘able to get to water’ rather than truly ‘on the beach’. Unless you count the Ozarks – we don’t have drivable beach.
Not in your zone or price but at Charleston you can walk to The Battery and the beach is a cheap and quick Uber. My daughter walks most days - as a way to destress.
You could make price but unlikely. But if she qualifies for Scholars, you get endowed money. I don’t see the desired undergrad majors.
URI has big merit. And the major. Communicative Disorders. And see 2nd link on beaches.
Ah, I see. Having grown up near the beach, I envisioned something different.
So, what we’re looking at now is an affordable college, strong in STEM fields, potentially communication disorders/speech-language pathology AND near the beach. Got it.
I’ll give that some thought.
Thank you! I think we’d rather give up comm dis/speech pathology for a better financial picture. If she falls in love with that field during shadowing -I’ve got a few potentials on the current list
I was also thinking of URI, @tsbna44, but out of state tuition, fees, room & board is $37,000+, which doesn’t quite make the target.
They have a few very large scholarships -but not if these limited awards are worth chasing.
I was just about to post the same thing. I think that they are very much worth chasing, given that all students with a high school gpa of 3.2 or higher are eligible. Your daughter is way above that. Students with a high school gpa of 3.8 are automatically admitted to their Honors program. That’s her! She’d be one of their top students. She should be a very strong candidate for one of these scholarships. You should look particularly at the Ryan and the Presidential scholarships and the Schilling award.
Remember that Rhode Island is a small state of only about a million people. They’d rather discount the price for an out of state student to bring her in rather than losing her altogether. For them, it’s like bringing in another in state student. And small state universities like URI need every student they can get to remain viable.
URI is not on the beach but the beaches are only about 10 minutes or so away. And Rhode Island has beautiful ocean beaches and nice beach communities as well as local fishing fleets. The water is warm when the students arrive in August and get even warmer over the next month or two. There are ferries to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard not too far away.
Really appreciate the insight! Okay - I will put this on the list. I always loved RI! And they have ample majors --so even if she doesn’t know what she wants to do -she should find something.
URI says up to $17k a year, no test considered.
The link I put above says they have water right there. Not sure how accurate but it’s what they say.
So maybe it works ??
Beach season is in full swing here in Rhode Island, but it’s always beach season at the University of Rhode Island. There are a dozen public beaches near our main campus in Kingston, and our Narragansett Bay campus has its own beach just a few steps from its classrooms.
This doesn’t apply to my daughter -but if anyone in the future is looking at this – there is a TUITION FREE program at the University of New England for families that make less than $100K or have a SAI of zero: Grants and Scholarships | University of New England in Maine
Yes, but the Narragansett Bay campus is for their well regarded Oceanography program and that’s about it. It’s not where the rest of the students spend any time. And the bay beaches are meh unless they’re groomed and maintained. The nicest beaches are the ocean beaches. Taylor Swift has a house in Watch Hill overlooking the ocean and the beaches at the west end. From there, it’s one long continuous beach until you get to Point Judith Pond inlet.
URI is in North Kingstown, which is one town off the water. You have to go south through South Kingstown to get to the ocean. Moonstone Beach is the closest beach.
Agree…not exactly a beach town…but still one that is worth a look see.
Malloy College (Long Island) and Mercy College (Westchester). I got these from the ASHA website.
Thanks! Perhaps they will be cheaper than the 30 or so colleges I’ve checked today. But hey - I added the University of Rhode Island to the list (and LI-Post)
