This is actually one of the things that tend to frustrate TAs here so much. Many of us came from undergrad schools where it wasn’t necessarily how much ground you could cover in a quarter, but how much material you could truly gain a mastery of. I know when I went to recitations with undergrads they tended to just want to know the answer and get out, and not necessarily how to really understand what was going on. I hardly think this is a problem in the students themselves, as most all of them are probably more motivated to understand than many of my friends in undergrad, but more a problem with the firehose mentality of the school.

That said, I think core is really a great idea, though I question the pace at which the courses move.

Also, if you’re someone like me that really likes to have time to think over problems and let things sink in, I’d also mention you’d probably be better off at a school on the semester system instead of quarters/trimesters.
