Since you guys are talking about dropping on here , no point in me making a new thread, … What about dropping a non impacted course, can you do that?

http://www.college.ucla.edu/up/counseling/regulations/dropping.htm

Dropping policy.
It looks like dropping a non-impacted during week 8 is much easier than impacted. Green restricted late drop sounds less serious than red drop…

Biochem is a f**ked up major. Every class is impacted…

Hmm…Just talk to your department/regular counselor and see what your chances are…I’d think they would have a general idea if your situation would pass or not…

I’m pretty sure if I can’t get over 90% in the final, I can’t get a C or C-. I screwed the first midterm, 40 points shy from the average. I probably screw the 2nd midterm. It’s so annoying that the professor told you which chapters will be on exam, but it ended up some exam questions totally not from these chapters at all.

I think I’m going to ask professors after I get my 2 nd midterms back.

I’m screwing 2 clases. Even if I dropped one, I’d end up like on academic probation.

I didn’t study hard for the 1 st mid term. But I tried so hard for the 2nd midterm. I did all the old exams. I was trying to predict the exam pattern. I focused on the wrong stuff and did very bad in the exams.

Professors didn’t change the stuffs they focused on exams for like 4 years, but suddenly they changed it all this quarter.

Hey shirley any updates? I think I’m on the same boat as you. This quarter I’m on Academic Probation and now I don’t know if I’ll be able to get my GPA to 2.0 because of Chem and Classics 10 D: What is your plan as of now? And damn it… I wish I went to UCI right now…

Welcome to UCLA!!!

Thank you DanielHagos…

Just a little update, 30 minutes after posting my last message and praying to God, I found out that I passed my calculus final
which means I finally passed a math class xD Now I’m hoping for at least 2 C’s or higher in my three remaining class and then I’ll be off probation. Things are looking somewhat better. :D

And with the curve, I might mangage to get a B in calc. +goes back to praying+

How did you get on academic probation? Obviously I know why, because your grades dropped but was it because of a outside circumstance that hindered your school work or were you not adjusting well?

I’m not on academic probation right now, but I think I’ll either on probation or STD in spring. I messed up all the finals this quarter. sigh
My plan is to retake the classes I messed up and take French 1 to boost my GPA. I think 3 upper division science classes are too much for me.

Well I don’t want to make any excuses for my bad grades, but during the fall quarter, I found out that my parents were getting a divorce since my sister and I won’t be around the house that much, so they said they have no reason to leave together no more (they can’t stand each other, always fighting blah blah)… and then towards the end of the quarter (during the first week of December) my dad told me he’s one of the people who will be laid off by this company. Then three weeks later, he was transferred to a different city by stayed with the same company, so all it good with that. So yeah, it didn’t really bother me as much as I thought it would because I would still be able to smile and concentrate when all this occurred.

That’s so much drama for you. I wish you can get out of academic probation.

To the OP: You gotta be kidding me. Yeah it does suck when you’re the one that doesn’t speak up. I go to community college so my professors/instructors are extremely accessible. However, there are instructors who mold different models for different students. I’m going to a UC and my professors/instructors know that. Hence, I, often, don’t get the babying and attention from instructors that I would normally get if I wasn’t an honors student choosing to go to a crowded school such as the large publics(ucla, berkeley, san diego etc etc). I feel sometimes it is unfair but I understand that this is life and some are going to get what they need and some aren’t. So I have learned to deal with it, find resources that I can utilize to make my stay in college easier and less stress consuming. Try researching online, try finding forums where you can ask a credentialed teacher or graduate student, find a local tutor(free or paid), do whatever it takes to make your life easier! (I don’t mean cheat and downloading papers)

I don’t get the writing help I need from my school writing center, so I was willing to step outside the box and use my own hardearned money from work to hire a local english graduate student as a tutor.

Your education is an investment that you’re making to get that first job. It is worth a few assertive shouts and a worthy contribution on your part.

I know how to utilize internet resources. I do pay for people to check my paper in order to get good grade. I do google syllabus and homework solutions before the quarter starts. I do ask in the forums but no one knows how to solve my problems at all. I did find tutors yet the rates aren’t affordable so I’ve to give up the idea.

I think my problem is about time management. I was taking four upper division science courses during the first three weeks. I dropped one later. It was too late. I screwed all the 1st midterms and couldn’t catch things up. Eventually I bombed the 2 nd midterms and finals. sigh.

the first couple quarters at a UC are always a learning process.

^couldn’t have said it better

If you aren’t vocal enough to ask questions when you’re suppose to (understandable for shy people), you could always just email the professor or TAs your questions. Most TAs, even those who don’t TA your section, will be more than willing to set up an individual appointment to meet with you if you just shoot them an email and let them know that you aren’t comfortable asking them your questions in front of others- you don’t have to go out and hire personal tutors.

what I realized last quarter, like jyancy just said, was that your TA’s are the BEST resource. Seriously, go to TA office hours if you have a question. They’ll make the concepts easier to understand. You don’t need to waste money on a tutor.

I received a D on Chemistry <_<… Sadly, it’s actually better than I thought… at least I get 1 point towards my GPA… +sigh+

Anywho, if I received a D+ in Calculus last quarter and this quarter I received an A-, will my last quarter calculus class be voided towards the GPA? I know my D+ won’t disappear off my transcript, but will the D+ still count towards my overall GPA?

For example: +hypothetical situation+

Fall Quarter:
English: A+ (4.0)
Math 32A: D+ (1.8)
Classics: B (3.0)
At this point… Overall GPA: 2.933

Winter Quarter:
Chemistry: D (1)
Math 32A: A- (3.7)
Geography: A+ (4)
Philosophy 7: A (4)
Winter Quarter GPA: 3.175

At this point after Winter Quarter, what will be my overall GPA?
3.283 (excluding my Math 32A grade from Fall Quarter)
OR
3.071 (including my Math32A grade from Fall Quarter)
