Rejected from my ED school. Should I change my application? Do I have a shot at any Ivies/T20s RD?

Good luck with exterior scholarships but the reality is they are a lot of effort with little gain. The far far far majority of money comes from the schools themselves - and many “lower tier” schools buy in higher level students with mer.

Applying to a school to see if you can get in is silly…but I get it. I did with a UC in my high school days.

That you’ve done it - you’ve done it. But don’t do any more.

Pick schools with purpose - and the reality is, Brown or similar aren’t the most important schools - but those that are assured for admission and cost are.

You have Fordham - but you won’t know if you get an NMF scholarship. They don’t give it to everyone.

If GMU is affordable, then great.

If not, that’s why you do a Bama, UTD, Maine, Tulsa, and others etc - or schools that guaranteed NMF (or in case of Tulsa, NMSF) a huge scholarship - in the case of Tulsa a 100% full ride.

When one has a budget, it is first and foremost - and too many kids apply to schools they think will work but will often leave them in a situation they can’t afford.

So get your list in order for what you 100% will get into and 100% can afford.

fellow non-accepted brown applicant who just got into clark EA and it’s one of my top schools despite being a “safety”! they also give merit scholarships (up to full ride) if that would be a bonus

Good luck. In addition to Michigan not meeting full need for you, please understand that any outside scholarships you receive will likely reduce the need based aid Michigan does give to you.

GMU meets the budget, not sure about Upitt yet, they haven’t released financial aid decisions. I guess I didn’t get the Fordham NMF award, that’s unfortunate.

Is the award announced yet if no one is NMF yet ?

@Mwfan1921 can you please clarify what you posted above!

Just going off the website, which I posted the verbiage. OP might contact admissions and confirm timing.

According to what’s posted above, the award is given to National Merit Semifinalists. Since 15,000 out of 16,000 semifinalists become finalists, I would assume anyone being awarded would also be a shoo in for finalist anyways. But in December, there are no National Merit Finalists yet. Accepting the award would then elevate them to National Merit Scholar I believe.

Sounds like you got lucky and were saved.

I know this student will likely get NMF status. What I’m unclear about is whether ALL NMF get the full free ride at Fordham. I do not think they all do. That’s what I would like clarified.

@fiftyfifty1 is the expert on this and has said many but not all. I was curious a lot the no one is NMF yet and so the timing of the award.

What the website says so if the student got they would know.

The full-tuition Fordham Scholarship is awarded to entering traditional first-year students for a maximum of eight fall and spring semesters (four years). Applicants designated as Semifinalists by the National Merit Recognition Program or Scholars by the National Hispanic Recognition Program, National African American Recognition Program, National Indigenous Recognition Program, or National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program are eligible to be considered for this scholarship. Recipients will exhibit excellent academic performance in a highly demanding curriculum, and present exceptional personal characteristics, commitment, leadership, and/or service. Typically, 3% of our admitted students are recipients of this award. Notification is made at the time of admission.

on the fordham thread people were saying they got their full ride NMF offers along with admission

And this is the part that this student apparently didn’t receive…

I think it’s worth a call to Fordham to inquire.

I’m actually going to go ahead and do this and see what they say! I’m pretty sure the decisions for these have already been released but I’m not sure. Might have just been for ED applicants

sorry, I’m a bit confused. saved from what?

The verbiage you posted (linked in one of my posts above) clearly says “Applicants designated as Semi-Finalists”, not Finalists.

Regardless, OP can call admissions and ask.

Yes, what I put above, the school confirmed that.

And @fiftyfifty1 has said many times not all get…

So as @Mwfan1921 suggests call and confirm…but then if not, make sure you have an affordable safety on your list.

Any school not meeting your need for affordability and ensure admission - is not an assured place for you to go - and you need an assured place to be this fall.

If you’re ok with GMU, then great.

If not, then go find one that “buys” kids like you - and you’ll save loot too.

And if a reach comes in and gets you budget to where you want, that’s great too. But you need the just in case - it’s THE most important school on your list.
