Try to think of the audition to show all you have learned and your passion for music. It is a guaranteed solo. Good luck! Hope to hear good news from you soon.

My D has only had one audition and she commented on how nice all the other auditioners were. Everyone was very supportive. Hopefully, we’ll continue to find that. That has been the case with her voice class at school - very supportive of each other.

What I meant write was:
Best wishes to all auditioners

At one place, there was a shortage of warm up rooms due to weather related reschedulings. DS actually SHARED a warm up room with another student and they had fun warming up together (yes…competing on the same instrument at the same audition).

I hope that readers did not think that I was implying in post #97 that my D avoided socializing at college auditions because she or I feared that other kids would play mind games and try to cause her a problem. I agree with Violadad that the “mean” people are a tiny minority. D never had a problem at any of her 8 college auditions. However, I do think that my D was very wise not to engage in much small talk before her auditions, not because of any concern that others might engage in mind games, but because talking with others would have taken her focus away from her mental preparations. D had quite a bit of audition experience before college audition season began. She learned from those experiences and from the counsel of her acting and voice teachers and her vocal coach, that being at her best for an audition meant that she needed to keep distraction to a minimum. D really works on being mentally focused before all auditions and performances. For her, that means finding a quiet place away from others.

As for me, I talked up a storm at D’s auditions :). I met lots of very nice people and I enjoyed the experience, though I would not want to do it again, LOL!

Yeah, I always feel very connected to other parents as we all care very much about the experiences our kids are having, all have the same amount of anxiety about their doing well. Generally, I have been so pleasantly surprised to find how much we all have in common. Also, I have observed only good wishes between the students. Now, that being said, we still have the big Conservatory audtions ahead of us in the coming weeks! Perhaps the atmosphere might be different here than in a Music department at at LAC.

Jazzzmomm - I found the parents quite friendly at my kid’s conservatory auditions. While the kids were off auditioning, the parents all made nervous converstaion. We didn’t talk specifically about our kids though (Nothing that might have come off as, “is your kid as good as mine?”) However, like others have mentioned, my S preferred to isolate himself as much as possible. Curtis had everyone waiting in the same crowded reception area, which he didn’t like. It’s not the mind games of others, it’s the mind games he plays with himself!

Conversely, my D’s auditions, at non-conservatories, weren’t “unfriendly” - people just didn’t tend to interact at all. In fact, there was only one school where we really even saw anyone else.

My D had her audition at CCM today. There were only voice majors, about 43, so we really didn’t see too many people at all. Everyone we met was very nice. I’m glad her first auditon went so smoothly. I did ask about warming up and they said we could try to find one. We lucked out. There was ONE room empty. We did have a problem getting lost all over Cincinnati, in a few rather scary places. Good luck to all auditioning on Saturday!

Has anyone heard from Oberlin? We haven’t heard one way or the other from them. I am wondering if maybe we didn’t send everything we were supposed to. Anyone else waiting?

Barbmaz,

That is great! We are leaving for CCM in a few hours. I hope we have the same experience! I cannot believe how many audition for a few spots. That is the depressing part of all of this!

We too are waiting to hear from Oberlin. We sent everything back in October. My dd’s instrument was not a prescreened one. We requested Feb. 16th for an audition date. We did receive an email in November that they received the application. Nancy

Hi,
My son applied to Oberlin in November, also a non-screened instrument (cello) and he was given an audition date by email within a few days–it was a second email, after the confirmation of receiving his applicaiton. He is coincidentally auditioning Feb. 16. I’d contact them asap–maybe your request fell through the cracks.

Thank you mom4. I’ll check with them right away. She is auditioning on oboe and we’ve heard back from everywhere she applied but Oberlin. Nancy

We’re still waiting for Peabody and McGill audition times. But I think they’re just more last-minute than the others…

Linnlew,

How did it go? You had a beautiful day! Let me know!

Linn, how did things go, did you and your D have a good day?

Barbmaz and srw,

Hi! Thanks for asking! Yes, it was a beautiful day! We had a good day yesterday. D thinks she did well. She auditioned (5 minutes worth) and then took the theory test which she said was OK. I went to the parent meetings and then everyone who auditioned met with the voice faculty. We both felt comfortable and found everyone there to be extremely nice. D wants to go there in the worst way. I told her she needs to be realistic and know the chances are slim. Anyway, I had no idea that they are on the “rolling admission” plan. They said letters could go out as early as this week. This is all my D can think about! She needs to think of other things…like the Indiana University scholarship package she needs to complete today!

1 audition done…6 to go!

Glad it went well, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for your D and all of the others out there going through this challanging process.

Haven’t heard an audition confirmation from SUNY Purchase yet, though everyone else has given S the go ahead and the date and time. Anyone out there auditioning at Purchase?

Linnliew - did they talk to her about how they do studio assignments? If she gets in, make sure she takes a sample lesson or several, if she hasn’t already, before accepting. The teacher is everything and even the best of the best schools don’t have flawless faculty. She will still have some homework to do on teachers and to whose studio she might be assigned. Make sure she knows how many students each studio has in it and what, if any, involvement graduate assistants will have in the undergrad program.
