Yep. It’s amazing how the city Fathers and Mothers of Renton have worked hard to shed the “Car Dealership Alley” image of the old town. Paul Allen could have easily chosen the name “Lug Nuts and Chrome Wheels Landing” and no one would have thought it odd.
Maybe the relocation helpers can arrange some leads with other intern(s).
Definitely work with the relocation service.
She can use Uber if she works late
Here are some short term furnished options, but they are aomewhat expensive. Not in the budget for most interns!
I’m totally moving!
Actually she can probably afford those kind of rents - not much different than the current housing costs at her college and she is getting a housing stipend with the internship
In SV, my son rented from a corporation that buys up condos. He lived in a 3 bedroom place. People would rent for a few months or more. Some roommates he liked more than others. The condo was fully furnished. (My son’s internship got extended to 15 months, but did not start out that way.)
Son tried Craig’s list to find an apartment wanting a roommate. He’d do Skype interviews, but just went with this corporation. They have properties all over CA., and possibly in Seattle. Does your DD want her own place?
I would definitely pick a near in, hip place if she can afford it. Lower Queen Ann is nice and there is a grocery, Capitol Hill and Fremont would be fun and easily accessible.
There are actually 3 groceries in lower Queen Anne: Safeway, QFC, and Metropolitan Market. the Whole Paycheck is just down the hill by the DNA bridge, too.
That would be my area of choice to live if I were young kiddo working at Amazon.
Well there you go - it’s decided!
Housing is expensive in areas convenient to Amazon. The relocation service likely knows of furnished apartments in line with the Amazon housing stipend that are also convenient. Since she will only be there 6 months I would be wary of going outside of recommended areas- but certainly bring these up with the service. Be warned that if she has a car parking is also horrendously expensive and costs a bit for Amazon employees- walking distance can be useful (definition depends on one’s fitness level- runners might do longer distances).
if she has a bike, its flattish from lower northeast Queen Anne & south east Fremont.
Or she could bike share.

Resurrecting this thread now that my daughter has spoken to the relocation company. They do not help with finding housing, they only handle paying her a monthly housing stipend. So any suggestions on how/where to look for furnished housing? I think the neighborhoods suggested before sounded good. She is looking only for a room (not a roommate) and I will not do Craig’s List (too many crime stories associated with it).
Sometimes these programs repeatedly send interns to the same locations/corporations. Has she checked with Amazon HR? Surely they would have information about where prior interns stayed while in town. I’d hope they would be willing to share it!
Amazon HR are not the most helpful in the world. Baby kiddo’s friend interned at Amazon and had the same problem 4 years ago. I think he ended up using one of the furnished short-term stay apartments for his 3 month internship.
As the internship is in Seattle and your daughter will be moving to the area without a car, I think I would be looking for housing in Seattle itself. The Landing in Renton is a nice enough spot with shopping, a movie theater, restaurants, and Coulon Park nearby, but it is a little farther away. You do see working people in their 20s hanging there and enjoying it. Taking the bus from the Renton Transit Center or The Landing into Bellevue is very doable. It sounds like The Landing to Seattle would also work but might be a little more effort, possibly two buses. That would be something to research. Again, I think I’d be looking in Seattle. Your daughter can compare rents. What about the option of an unfurnished apartment and adding a bed, table or desk, and a chair or two? It’s a thought anyway.
@kiddie, does your D no longer have a roommate for her six month stay? She is now only looking for a single room?
I am an eastsider but we are in Seattle about 2x/week. We have had nothing but good experiences with Seattle Craigslist, and continue to use it frequently. My parents found a 2 month rental through it.
If she’s only looking for a single, furnished room, I would look at rooms in the U District. There are many houses rented by the room to UW students. Some of them do studies abroad or on other campuses, or internships and sublet the rooms. However, I believe when my S was looking, he stuck to Craigslist. He found one too, but in S. Seattle. The Landing IS a good place to be-close to everything, including multiple buses. But it’s not Seattle.
My two older kids do everything through Craigslist.Their places to live, their furniture, their first jobs, even D’s pets, have all come from Craigs. You meet people in public places or bring someone with you. The places listed in the apartment finding websites are going to be on the expensive side (generally) and most of the rooms, especially the furnished ones, will not be there. H has sold many things on Craigs and we’ve never had a problem, and a friend buys and sells as a side business, also without issue. Good luck-I know more about Renton and S. Seattle than the north end, but good luck!
It’s interesting that people are recommending Renton. For a young person working at a South Lake Union internship, Renton would not be my choice unless nothing in Seattle was affordable or available.
