What are you seeing for rents in the Capitol Hill area? A family member is looking and discouraged.
What is the budget? Does it have to be that specific area?
Capital HIll rents are pricy right now, DDs lease is up for renewal 2B/2B, she is finding the prices are nearly $1000 more than she is paying now by the time she factors in all the add ons. (laundry, parking utilities, etc)
A lot of MSFT and Nintendo younger employees view Capitol Hill as THE place to live, and this also drives the prices way up. MSFT busses them to the Eastside campus across the bridge; being mostly single, they do not mind the 45-min commute.
increased housing hasn’t made it more affordable unfortunately.
but 45 min to work isn’t bad. it takes me that long to get to Capitol hill from my city neighborhood. This city is not set up for crosstown traffic.
But at least I went with my gut and didn’t buy grandmas house in Magnolia. Even an older friend of mine who just moved from the east coast last year, and bought in Magnolia is regretting her decision.
Its not only dead, but its dead because access is limited.
Not the Onion.

How’s the search coming?
I have another new location that I am looking into - on Pike near the convention center - how is that neighborhood - looks convenient to everything and walkable to Amazon
That neighborhood is accessible to both downtown and Capitol Hill.
I don’t think of walking from there to South Lake union, but I guess it is just over a mile.
You could probably also find a bus or the SLUT.
It looks like it is very close to the freeway, so there might be some noise and possibly spill over of touristy crowds, but she can easily walk to and from work, as EK said.
Pike near the convention center is walkable to all downtown attractions and Capitol Hill. I wouldn’t really think of it as being walkable to Amazon but is has transit access. It could be done but would not be an ideal walk. That Pike/Pine/Olive corridor is one of the “gentrified” areas that is referenced in EK’s spoof videos. (still crying over the B & O)
Google maps has it as a 16 minute walk - under a mile. so given that location vs. the other two - 1300 block of East Marion near the university or 4th and Clay - which is the best of the three?
^^^^
They did open in Ballard, but didn’t they finally retire?
Isn’t B & O espresso where Matt Dillion vows that the " haters will just make them stronger", in Singles?
You might like Zeitgist.
I still miss the coffee shop in the Elliott bay bookstore.
And the old REI. I really miss the old REI. All the Art Wolfe prints along the ramp. And the smell of creosote.
And Piecoras.
Sigh.
The convention center would actually be pretty convienent to live next to, because lots of bus routes stop there.
There is freeway park, that I would only go to during the day, but otherwise it’s lots of glass & cement.
But it would be really easy to go either east to Capitol Hill, or west to the waterfront.
Bookmarking this thread, kid#2 mentioned Seattle for future internship.
Where is kid #2 looking to work, @DrGoogle?
Next year she is thinking of Amazon. Amazon hires a lot of students from her school. In 2013, it’s top employer, I have not found anything for 2014. Summer is a good time to experience living at a different place.
I think Amazon pays pretty well. However, it is a serious slave ship, apparently they work their butts off, with not much time to experience the city. Maybe she can also apply at places like Google, Microsoft, and some of the other employers that are a little kinder.
She doesn’t like Microsoft nor Apple. I know Amazon is a slave ship but I think it may stretch her skills, but it’s her idea, not mine. From what I’ve read she can do summer internship at Amazon and then permanent job at Google like some students from her school. That’s why I’m hoping it’s only for summer.
I think Google treats their employees awfully well. Plus, one can do anything for a summer, even work their butts off at Amazon! Especially when you’re young. I’m sure it’s great experience, and a fantastic thing to put on your resume. But it would be nice to have an internship at Google, that would be a really great lead into a job there too.
D’s friends who interned at Amazon had plenty of time to explore, party, and sightsee.
Ah, the energy of youth! Though the people I’ve talked to (in their twenties), say they are working constantly. My oldest kid isn’t even interested in applying, though he has plenty of time to work, being young and single. He just doesn’t want to be expected to work all the time.
