^ Wholeheartedly agree

Thanks to you both for the above two posts. Hope MITChris will get to it as well…

^ I imagine MITChris is flooded with applications at this point, and may not be on CC as much. See this post:

In any case, I’ll be around, my guess is that Mollie and other people will be too. While we’re not official, we’re officially helpful ^^

Anyway, the responses given already seem to cover it. 590 is a low score - one that I would choose to try to boost (Admissions likes to see things in the 700s). But one score alone won’t kill an otherwise strong application.

@pseudoreal -

thanks for helping out
siyenga has it right.

siyenga, is your son ESL? if so, he might consider the TOEFL…

Thanks for the response. He is not ESL. He is a ‘left brain’ type of kid I think. He has very high math/Science abilities (taken courses like complex analysis and Abstract algebra after taking all other calculus and physics courses of advanced nature) He also has a paper in partial diff eqns. So he had limited time to do SATs and his only bad score is CR ‘590’ :-). We are thinking if his ap gets defered due to this score, then he might take it again. He is waiting for the EA decision to register for January date. But wondering if the adcom will let us know the reasons. MIT is the only school which might make him redo SAT. He has a very good chance with his other choice schools. Can you give me an idea?

regards,
siyenga

I think your current strategy is good.

one of my frd. contacted his ec and was told it’s waste to apply for MIT’s if u r not an olympiad medalist?is it true?will a student be surely rejected if he/she isn’t an olympiad medalist but has done good at school and in activities???

if your friend was told that, your friend was misinformed.

MITChris -

I am not a MIT applicant (read: Asian girl with a healthy and deserved fear of math, who also happens to be completely and utterly disinterested in science and technology).

However, I’m on the MIT board often–or at least, often enough to appreciate the presence of actual MIT representatives on CC. On behalf of CCers who are actually MIT hopefuls, thank you for caring enough about the CC community to patiently answer questions, post “insider” information and advice, correct rumors, etc. MIT seems to have the friendliest admissions committee by far.
I wish other top schools were more like MIT in this respect.

7 people from my school, many of whom are at the top of the class, applied to MIT EA. I am just posting to wish them luck (though I believe it is utterly impossible more than 2-3 will get in)!!!

thanks zEx :)

This thread should be stickied on the general boards. Being a '11 applicant, I can say that “Chance” threads don’t help the situation at all. No matter what you’re told, these people haven’t read your application, don’t know you, and never will. Rejection is not a personal failure, as some people, including myself, will no doubt feel when I get my Chicago EA results tomorrow, and the news isn’t good, but I always try to remind myself of that. Like I told my friend the other day: I did my best, and now I absolve myself of any responsibility of having been rejected. Even though I’m not applying to MIT and won’t go into math/science, I appreciate this post.

Hi, this is a really last minute question related to MIT apps.

On the application for SAT 2, there’s only sections to input math and science scores. If i took a spanish SAT2, where do i input the score? or do i just leave it out?

also, REALLY IMPORTANT.

*MIT says they require 1 math SAT2 and 1 science SAT2.
What if i only took a math one and a spanish one?
I read on the MIT site of an admission’s officer’s blog that they don’t care which SAT2’s we take, as long as it’s our strongest subjects. so i’m not entirely sure.

Should I not apply anymore if I didn’t take a science SAT 2 ?

I think they meant they don’t care which science test you take. You can take the Science SAT II in January…[Tests & Scores | MIT Admissions](Tests & scores | MIT Admissions)

I don’t think the Spanish will be considered, but you can put that info in the last section of the app where you add additional info.

A Science SAT 2 is required, spanish doesn’t count. I read somewhere that even if you send more than one science and one math the other scores aren’t considered. Can you sign up for a science test in January? Wait, can you link to the blog where it said “they don’t care which SAT2’s we take, as long as it’s our strongest subjects”? Because everywhere on their website it says 1 math and 1 science.

@Ashley, you need to sign up for the subject tests and pick either Bio (E or M), Physics, and/or Chemistry to take.

Hi, ashleycat, and welcome to College Confidential.

I don’t have an answer to your question, but I want to give some (unsolicited, I admit) advice about Internet message boards. If you look at the dates on the posts just before yours, you’ll see that they’re all more than two years old. Appending your question to an old conversation, especially one where the thread title has nothing to do with your question, isn’t normally the best way to get answers. (On CC, additionally, it tends to annoy the heck out of the regulars when you revive dormant threads.) Generally, when you have a question, you’ll do better to ask it in a current thread on that topic, or to start a new thread with an appropriately descriptive title (e.g., “MIT application and SAT2”).

According to the Official Scrabble Player’s Dictionary, AA is a word :)

(though I’m glad you raised it from the dead if you found it helpful
)

This thread ought to be pinned
