I’ve got the stainless/granite kitchen, but it’s all arranged so weirdly. I’d tear out the weird boomerang shaped island where only two people can sit comfortably. For some reason, NO one in my house likes to sit at a proper table for a meal…and everyone prefers to eat on a counterstool at the island. So I give up…if I had the money, I’d build an island big enough for a half dozen people… and I’d toss the kitchen table and turn the breakfast room into a reading nook. Then I’d get rid of another weird feature…a furred down ceiling over the weird boomerang island. It makes the island look like an operating room table.

I swear…men should never design kitchens.

(If I had money left over, I’d fill that big hole in the backyard with dirt and grow roses. But with only the first one in college and one to go, I fear there will be no improvements in my future for a very long time.)

I will actually be in that position next year and the plan is: remodel 2 bathrooms (no addition, just new materials to replace the old) and landscape the backyard …planters only. The lawn and patio area are already done.

A twenty foot extension to the garage, lumber to make new kitchen cabinets, new flooring for the common areas. With another $10k I’d redo the hideous basement bathroom (last updated in 1979).

I’m still laughing at my earlier post…170 sq feet! HHHHAAAAA…it’s barely 50 square feet. Barely. It’s closer to 45. I must have been fantasizing…

So yep. The bathroom.

Oh yeah, and now D is back for 5 weeks, so it’s being shared again. Sigh.

What an interesting topic. I just moved back into my house, and the projects seem insurmountable! Kitchen–orangey/mustard mica countertops, mica cabinets, original carpet in LR/DR, popcorn ceilings, old-fashioned hurricane shutters, etc. Sometimes I think about switching careers and becoming a handy-person.

Mathmom and bookworm, that would be called “Harvest Gold”. I’ve got it too. About the time we finally can do something about it, it will be the new “IN” color, haha. My “wants” far outnumber the “needs”… I guess the bath could stand to be re-done. I’ve kind of gotten used to the phenomenon of the toilet running for 2 seconds at a time and occasionally flushing itself.

Our old bathroom was blue - blue toilet, blue bathtub, blue sink, blue floor and blue walls. There were small 2" blue tiles that came all the way up to shoulder height. It was a blue cave compounded by the length of one whole long solid wall of mirror. After 6 years of that, there is no blue in my house.

I kind of wish I had taken pictures to show people that, yes, you can overdo a color.

Before we redid our pink bathroom, I could only dream of blue fixtures. (We chose white for the renovation - which is what most people probably turn to after living with someone else’s color choices long past their expiration date). It was in such bad shape you could actually see through the basement ceiling if the light was on in the bathroom above. Husband would shower and tiles would actually fall off the wall into the tub - dangerous if, like most people, you shower barefoot. It sounded like this: crash, splash, swear. Repeat as needed.

if i had 50k, i’d have the downpayment for the house i wanted to buy :)

as for this house here, my sister and i re-did our rooms a few years ago. i think my room cost about 1,000, with hers costing slightly more. that includes new carpet, dresser, and desk. i kept the same bed and tv stand. my sister got new carpet and a new dresser. her carpet was slightly more than mine because she picked a really expensive one, and her room is smaller as well. my parents re-did their rooms when we did ours and they did our dining room, living room, bathroom and hallway as well. I think the only thing really left would be the kitchen.

so with 50k I would think we could re-do our entire house again as well as add a garage.

Then there’s the bubble gum pink bathroom with black trim. It could actually could be cool in a retro sort of way, if only it hadn’t been repaired several times with pink tiles that didn’t match in color.

At anyrate, if the question is which room you should remodel, I think it’s the one that annoys you the most.
