Years back, my Dad rented a full size van to get my stuff back to ny. There was no furniture. I went to grad school in atlanta, and drove down in a car, and sent a couple of trunks by Greyhound bus and picked them up at the Greyhound terminal. When I left Atlanta to go back to NY a few years later, I shipped all that did not fit in the car by UPS for a very reasonable sum (no furniture). I would never dream of hauling a trailer unless I was a professional in that area.

In helping my S get to and from his university we investigated many options. The cheapest way to move goods seemed to be Amtrack. Each passenger can check 3 bags, and pay for an additional 3, $10 each, if I’m reading the website correctly. Must be less than 50 lbs per bag. Maybe you could fly out and take the train back, checking oodles of luggage and boxes in the process.

I know that each year that ends, both of my college kids end up coming home with 1/2 of what went up with them!! They’ve said their stuff was in storage…haha…but, when Sept comes around again, we end up having to re-buy what I thought was stored!! After their soph year…I refused to buy anything else!! except linens…and even that annoyed me! We lost tv’s, micro’s…ugh…but now, my husband will go to one school…I’ll go to the other…what won’t fit into the kids and our cars coming home…is going to be written off! Its not worth the hassle anymore. But…we aren’t purchasing the same stuff for them now that they are graduates! If they’ve managed to care for their belongings…good for them…if not…oh well:)

Just ship it back or throw it away. I shipped 2 boxes for a friend cross-country (one ~55lb box and one ~25lb box) for a total of about $65 with DHL (we were going to the same college, she was going overseas right after graduation, lived in Canada, and reimbursed me for the shipping costs, so all I had to do was book the appointment for DHL to pick it up).

When I had to move a few pieces of inherited furniture and about about a dozen boxes of household goods and books from Iowa to Maryland, I investigated renting a U-Haul type truck one way, a U-Haul type trailer, and having it shipped. I went with the moving company. My move was consolidated with other moves headed in the same direction, and since I didn’t need to have everything delivered by a particular date, it was even less expensive. The moving company reps can visit your daughter, look at all of her stuff, and give her a written estimate. If there is more than one company that handles moves between these two cities, she can get multiple estimates.

The suggestion of shipping with Amtrak is good too. I don’t know the cost for shipping unaccompanied packages, but description of this service should be on their website.
