Mr. Ramirez, a very friendly and affable young man, said in answer to a question that I posed to him that he’s not sure whether more colleges will go to a single-deadline admission system like Princeton’s new system or go to a system like some of those other systems out there. For the moment, at least, Harvard, Princeton, and the U of Virginia

are sticking to their plan of having a single admission deadline at the turn of the year and no early admission plan at all. I PERSONALLY think that the joint site of the three colleges, which I have discovered is hosted by the U of Virginia, would be more convincing to low-income students if the photo models shown on the site didn’t all have such perfect teeth. More generally, I think the word is still getting out that colleges like Princeton are in earnest about desiring more low-income students. A lot of parents in my part of the country don’t hear that message, or at least don’t believe it so far.
