Reputation of Caltech

I was watching a rerun of “Law & Order:SVU”, and it was a story about this brilliant girl who went to a private prep school for the exceptional students. Ice-T mentions something to this effect “.…I have heard of that school and their students are so brilliant and they go Harvard, MIT and CalTech..”

So CalTech’s reputation has even spread to TV drama’s. May be now others will start taking notice -:)

“start taking notice”?? Come on… Caltech was the college for the Tron movie’s main characters, both the computer hacker son and the father who founded the business. Caltech is very thinly disguised as the university in The Big Bang Theory. And so on…

I still believe Caltech’s recognition to general public isnt that great. Like I said, it’s a great school for technology. When I got into Caltech in my senior year, I told the teachers and other students(white kids)I got into Caltech.
They didn’t know what it was although some teachers did know.

People in LA or surrounding area have not even heard of caltech.

You’ll find that’s true of just about any school without a large sports program.

but we do have a large sports program, clearly: http://www.its.caltech.edu/~nwatson/on_the_map.png

We’re on the front page of the LA times, and on the front page of ESPN: Los Angeles right now.
Apparently Caltech was also just a trending topic on twitter.
What is this whole deal with “Caltech’s recognition to the general public isn’t that great”?

Maybe now we’ll get the recognition we deserve. ;)

(Personally, I’m proud of our football team’s impressive non-losing streak.)

Are you serious? Have you checked out the latest information about Caltech from school website? do you thing Caltech is some trivial boastful public school? [2010 Incoming Class Profile - Caltech Caltech Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.caltech.edu/applying/profile)
class of 2014 has admission rate of 12.55%, how’s that compared to 30%? I admit that many people don’t like Caltech. I don’t like a lot of professors here myself. Teaching quality is pitiful (except physics and some chemistry courses). But that doesn’t mean getting into Caltech is as easy as getting into some big public school. besides, I do believe that we offer some of the best research opportunities around the world.

I think the poster of the 30% acceptance may have gotten confused between Caltech and Cal Poly Tech (which is about 30-40% acceptance)…
