Rest in Peace: College Closings

Check propublic you should be able to find their financial statements. As SUNY keeps sending out automatic acceptance to students colleges relying on instate NY students will not survive.

I think CUNY had a huge jump in applications this year so that’s not going to help.

I was sorry to hear about College of St. Rose closing. Famous alum - Jimmy Fallon.

I don’t think it’s been mentioned upthread, but St Augustine’s University, a HBCU in Raleigh, North Carolina, lost its accreditation last week, which generally means it’s just a matter of time before it shuts down. (And it doesn’t help that its president has just been ousted, after she filed a gender discrimination complaint against the Board of Trustees—so there’s a lot of instability at leadership levels.)

St Aug has a long history of financial woes, quick-change leadership and almost-shut-downs. It also has a long impressive history of changing the lives of so many students/graduates. I might be inured to its troubles, but I have a feeling it will just barely make it through this critical stage just as it has for the past couple of decades.

I know a couple of professors and deans there and, while the danger is real, there has always been a last minute fix waiting in the wings. There are too many good people doing great work there for St Aug to go quietly into the night.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for St Aug.

Honestly, if Saint Rose can close. Any college is on the verge of closing in the near future.

On what basis do you say that? St Rose appeared to be in dire straits, and their enrollment had declined 32% from 2011 to 2021. (And yes, the last year of that was steeper due to covid, but it had been dropping steadily the years preceding that.) On what basis do you think it was in a healthy enough condition that closing was so completely unexpected?

Update on Bacone College: The plan to auction off the campus is on hold, at the request of the company that had a lien against it.

One wild detail: As part of its impending closure 45 faculty were laid off, leaving 4(:flushed:) to provide the teachout for seniors graduating this coming spring. The college is putting a brave face on it and saying that they may be able to keep on as a going concern and rebuild, but I don’t know how you bounce back from that.

And here’s one for the watchlist that wasn’t on my bingo card: Purdue Global

For information on the untenable financial position it is in (and a little bit on the similar-ish issues facing the University of Arizona Global Campus), see: Purdue Global Owes $128 Million To Its For-Profit Partner. It May Not Be Able To Pay.

I feel like a dunce, but I never realized that Purdue Global or U. of Arizona Global Campus were anything beyond online schools. I didn’t realize they also contained in-person options for folks around the country. Knowing that, it’s definitely not surprising that they’re not doing well financially.

@AustenNut … it feels like the only ones being sold on the value of these arrangements are the administrators, who commit to fees that in hindsight are unlikely to be generated by the online institution without “branding”. I’m guessing that the folks at Purdue were shown models that said “With your brand and our infrastructure…we’ll attract XXX students with a growth rate of YYY”.

A “non-profit” guaranteeing revenue for a “for-profit” feels dangerous. The for-profit fees need to be a function of total revenue… but the for-profit folks know better and are looking to lock in revenue.

University of Redlands taking over Woodbury University in a Merger

PAFA (Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts) closing. This is really sad. It was the first art school in the United States, established in 1805.

For decades has had an agreement with University of Pennsylvania, allowing students to apply for dual-enrollment after their freshman year, and graduate with degrees from both institutions. A quirky back door to an Ivy League education.

The Storied Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Will Close Its College in 2025.

Another regional campus closing in person classes at university of Wisconsin at Green Bay Marinette County campus… the third in 2 years

I find this merger/takeover by U. of Redlands very interesting, especially because of its recent joining with Presidio Graduate School in San Francisco.

Looking at the map, there are obviously some big differences here (75 miles between the two southern schools and about 380 miles between Woodbury & Presidio). For schools that presumably prided themselves on providing smaller, more intimate academic experiences (in comparison with big state schools, for example), it seems odd that they would be bifurcating their student body and doing more hybrid instruction, but perhaps those are the types of moves necessary to be financially sustainable?

As a Redlands alum, I get all the updates, newsletters, etc. Here is how I understand it. The Marin Campus offers graduate programs in business and theology, so the typical undergrad student would only be on the main campus in Redlands. The Woodbury acquisition is new, so I don’t know what that will look like yet. It sounds like that will have undergraduate classes.
