Retirement looms...........

The folks at SS are trying to help you understand your options, so that is why it is important to include the spousal info. Some folks will delay their benefits for a better income at a later date. Knowing what spouse can get, and when is important for that decision making.

Maybe that’s the reason, but we’ve already decided to file for SS. My husband is making the appointment to show them proofs that he is legit. They want my husband to mail in the original certificates but my husband doesn’t want to hence the reason he has to see them in person.

Yes, things get “lost” in the mail and you will likely NOT get mailed certs returned. Glad you’re seeing them in person. In our state, the best date to try to see them is when there is a state holiday but NOT a federal one. It’s much less crowded on those days than normally because folks just assume the office is closed. H found this out by accident back when we were trying to get him signed up for Medicare B and had to make 2 visits to Medicare/ SS to get it done.

Interesting info from a friend - her military ID did not exactly match up with other documents (goes back to keeping a maiden name as a middle name…). A lot of local people had to get documents straightened out at SS office in person.

Except for our DS, both my name (shall I say names) and my wife’s name have been in a mess. We do not know how many names we have had out there.

Even my names in IRS and SS do not match. But somehow both of them still can find me (I hope IRS can not find me but SS can find me, for an apparent reason. LOL. I think they use my SS number to locate me because the name is not as reliable.I may eventually need to sort these out.)

This is the reason why I gave DS a “very simple” name. (Well, he still has two versions, with or without the middle name.)
