Retirement plans and ideas for us over fifty folk.

Gee, am I the only one here who will continue working until at least 65 due to being scared to death I don’t have enough money to last me until I die??? We have a small pension (frozen in the automaker bloodbath), 401K, and 403B … no employer-paid retirement healthcare … can’t imagine being able to retire for a long time (we are 52 and 54). I keep seeing people our age in the death notices in our paper, and I cross my fingers & hope that we will live long enough to enjoy some of the fruits of our labors.

DH has no intention of retiring, including after 65. I thought after my heart attack that he would have changed his workaholic lifestyle, but that has not been the case. Heck, I’d be thankful if he came home before 9 pm every night.

Kinda stinks. I already have two big medical strikes against me, and it would be nice to enjoy time with him. There are no guarantees in this world.

I am flirting with what to do when H retires. May become even MORE part-time than I am now. Will have to see how things evolve. So far, it has been pretty interesting running a non-profit, but I do get very tired of asking for donations, writing grant applications & reports. Will see what evolves.

We are very fortunate that H’s medical insurance is supposed to cover both of us for the rest of our lives, as long as we pay our share of premiums (about 25-33%). His pension should also keep us at a comfortable lifestyle, and is for his lifetime (with a significantly lesser portion for my lifetime if I live longer than him). Of course, legislation could reduce all of this, but hopefully it won’t or we’ll be significantly less comfortable in the future.

Not feeling hopeful about retiring, and certainly not before 65. I HAD a job with a pension including health benefits at one point, but there was no way I was going to WILLINGLY live until retirement working there…

Kelsmom, you are not alone! I feel exactly the same as you do.

Will hit 70 in December and still working away. Seventy-two is the target date for retirement from my retirement job.

Kelsmom, you are definitely not alone. DH is self-employed, so no employer pension plan (other than what he’s contributed), no employer healthcare. He may go part-time as he gets closer to retirement and finds someone to buy his business. If he retires before 65 it would be because the stock market has had an unbelievable run.

I hope to keep working past 65. I may end up taking over my D’s apartment in NYC (if she goes to grad school out of the city), and giving up my car.
