For us, ambrosia was like heavenly hash, but no cream or marshmallows. We had both on occasion.

My grandmother used to make cinnamon apples. Peel the apples, split in half, core, poach in liquid with a jar of dissolved cinnamon red hots. Topped with whipped cream, of course. I loved these every holiday!

That recipe on the Nilla Wafer box with the bananas and vanilla pudding!

I’d forgotten about those. My mother used to buy them in 3-packs at the base commissary, usually a half dozen at a time. She liked them for a quick lunch after her morning round of golf. I had to sneak a jar while she was out, but not too often or she’d notice.

Onion dip made with Lipton soup mix was something we had on hand every weekend. I still like it, but don’t want to know the sodium content.

Chicken fricassee over white rice was in frequent supper rotation when I was growing up. I love it, but am too lazy to make it very often.

Sausage and cheese balls made with biscuit mix. A few people teased me about making them for a big holiday party years ago, but I noticed they were eaten quickly. So were the Pigs in Blankets made with mini Oscar Mayer hot dogs. Bourbon balls made with vanilla wafers, cocoa powder and chopped pecans was another party favorite my parents served that I made for our holiday parties, too.

Egg and olive sandwich
Beef stroganoff
Rice pudding - still my favorite dessert!

Ohhhhhh yes!!! My mother loved those and we would get them as a treat sometimes! She saved the glasses too we drank oj out of them :relaxed:

Spam. There is a place in Breckenridge that still has it on the menu—heavenly.

Yum! I don’t live in HI but good to know if I ever visit.

Deviled eggs. Especially with tiny bits of chopped dill pickle.

We were at a restaurant in the summer and they served truffle deviled eggs. So good.

Make that a second BIG YES to deviled eggs.

I forgot - chopped liver.

Also, fried liver and onions.

Interesting to see what people mention as “retro” - I mean, did deviled eggs ever go out of style?

My mom also used to make cheese balls at the holidays. She actually made one this year and while we didn’t have “holidays” as a family she gave me some when I visited her post Holiday and it tasted as yummy as before.

The sausage/cheese/bisquick balls. H loves them. I still make them now and then - sometimes for a quick dinner (and leftovers for breakfast or vice versa) - to “update” them they are great dipped in TJ’s Sriracha and Roasted Garlic BBQ Sauce.

I still smile thinking about my younger brother who is a great cook now and confessed recipe tryer, bread baker, NYC foodie - but whose favorite thing growing up was a can of Spaghettios with meatballs.

Agree @abasket I still eat several of these on a regular basis.

I think deviled eggs went out of style but became trendy again. A lot of restaurants now have deviled eggs on their appetizer menu.

I make deviled eggs all the time! I agree, they do seem trendy now. I recently tried to recreate a version from a restaurant… mixed in some avocado, maple bacon crumbles, avocado Mayo, paprika, pickles and pickle juice. It was good.

Speaking of eggs- pickled beets and eggs. Someone always seemed to bring them to picnics when I was growing up.

Pigs in Blankets - used to make often when son was young! But it’s hard to find a good all beef cocktail wiener; Trader Joes has them. They also have parmesan pastry pups but I prefer to make them myself with Pillsbury crescent dough.

Is it retro or regional - Fried Bologna Sandwiches on white bread with ketchup ?

My kids think I had a rough childhood with this being a favorite lunch - I also remember my brother and I would fight about who got the last piece of Bologna - as it always had the Oscar Meyer logo indented on it and we thought that was so cool

Not really a food I still like - well haven’t had it since childhood - but brings a smile to my face.

now I’m totally craving this. You can get “fancy” by using goat cheese, but block of cream cheese is just fine.
