(reverse) Transfer to California Community college from OOS (UIUC)

Hi,

I am from CA. Got into UIUC CS+Ling program and joined as freshman in Fall 2018. After one year being OOS student, I was home sick, my health deteriorated badly and also realized that CS (basically coding) was not my liking. Currently, I decided to pursue my major in Business (maybe Management Information Systems).

What are my options ?

  1. Can I apply to community college (CC) for fall 2019 ? Or am I too late?
  2. Are the credits from UIUC transferable to CC (atleast the GenEds) ?
  3. I have couple of APs completed in HS. Can those be used in CC ?
  4. So how many years should I be in CC, before I could transfer into CSU or UC ? Is it the number of years or minimum number of credits before one could transfer to CSU or UC ?

Any other suggestions are welcome. Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

You need to contact the community colleges that you would be interested in attending, and ask them these questions. They are the experts.

When you apply for admission at the CC, you will need to send an official copy of your UIUC transcript. Whether or not any of those courses are recorded as transferred on your CC transcript, you will still need to send an official copy of that UIUC transcript when you apply for transfer to a CSU or UC.

For CSU’s and UC’s, you need a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter units to transfer. Depending upon which AP credits you have, how many of your UIUC credits are CSU and UC transferable, you may only need another year or two at a CC to transfer.

CSU’s have ADT for specific majors which guarantees admission to a CSU (not always your choice CSU) if you complete the major program.

UC’s have TAG and that guarantees admission to one of the 6 UC’s that participate as long as you meet the UC course and GPA requirements (some majors are excluded).

As suggested by @happymomof1, you need to contact the CC’s of interest and meet with a transfer advisor to determine your transfer plan.

Thanks @happymomof1 and @Gumbymom

Courses from UIUC :

Intro to Computer Science (java) C-
Intro to Language Science D-
Introduction to Theater Arts C
Introduction to Astronomy B-

APs from HS (and scores) :

AP Biology - 4
AP Calculus AB - 4
AP Psychology - 4
AP Literature - 3
AP Physics - 3
AP Spanish - 3
AP Statistics - 3

ACT score : 33/36

I’m not sure how many of these will be useful for business major and could be transferred to CC.
Tomorrow I’ll try to check with our local CC.

You do need to do better in college courses to be able to transfer. The least selective CSUs require a GPA of 2.0 or higher; it looks like your current GPA is lower than 2.0.

http://web2.assist.org/web-assist/welcome.html should help you with what courses you need for take for transfer to a CSU or UC.

This is not uncommon. California Community Colleges will welcome you. Contact the school of your choice.

  1. Yes
  2. Generally, yes (except the D)
  3. Yes
  4. Depends on how many credits would transfer to CSU/UC and how many that you take each term.

btw: in addition to your local cc, some like Santa Monica Collge offer online courses that could be transferable. Check around your neighboring cc’s.

Thanks for your responses. For now I was able to use the following courses worth 22 credits in my CC (after meeting with the CC counselor)

Introduction to Theater Arts - 3 CSU/UC credits
AP Biology - 4 CSU/UC credits
AP Calculus AB - 5 CSU/UC credits
AP Psychology - 3 CSU/UC credits
AP Literature - 3 CSU/UC credits
AP Physics - 4 CSU/UC credits

I need 38 more to get into CSU or UC. I’m taking 6 credits this summer, maybe 15 in Fall, 3 in Winter & 15 in Spring. That should satisfy the 60 credit requirements before I could transfer into CSU/UC.

It is not just about having the 60 semester units for transfer but having the required pre-req courses for your major completed prior to transfer especially for the UC’s. The more required and recommended courses you have completed at time of application (including GE’s - The Golden four for the CSU’s) the better your position will be for transfer. You will also have to submit your UIUC transcript which can impact your chances.

Note that CSU and UC may give different numbers of credits for each AP score of 3 or higher. Note that subject credit or advanced placement may require a 4 or 5 score, depending on the CSU or UC campus.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/ap-credits/index.html

(semester units)
AP biology = 6 at CSU, 5.3 at UC
AP calculus AB = 3 at CSU, 2.6 at UC
AP psychology = 3 at CSU, 2.6 at UC
AP English literature = 6 at CSU, 5.3 at UC
AP physics = depends on which exam(s) (1, 2, B, C mechanics, C E&M)
AP Spanish = 6 at CSU, 5.3 at UC
AP statistics = 3 at CSU, 2.6 at UC

Also, if you take a college course that covers similar material as your AP credit, you will only get credit once. For example, if you take calculus 1 in college, you should not expect to get credit units for both that course and AP calculus AB.

Plan to stay two years, as you not only need credits but very specific classes that need to be taken as a sequence and the highest possible GPA to make up for your UIUC grades. For MIS, you really want a 3+ Gpa in CC.
