LOL - I was already thinking about stopping at DSW to try on Teva Tirra next week. Now methinks it will definitely need to happen.
I’m not going on a river cruise but am similarly worried about what to bring, in only a carry-on, with similarly always appropriately attired family members to a ritzy (in my mind) island this summer. I live in shorts and sneakers and ankle socks but these look like they might work with my black capri pants if we go to a dressier dinner and could also double as my second pair of walking around shoes. I’m glad I clicked on this thread. Now off to measure my feet to see if I need to order M or W. I’m usually a W. I also have really really hard to fit feet and cannot wear anything without an ankle strap or it will go flying off my foot.
I have similar worries about a trip to Napa in September.
Now that I’m retired most of my clothes come from Athleta, Lulu Lemon, etc., and I have a fair number of sundresses for tropical vacations, but I just don’t have a lot of “nice happy hour” kinds of clothes. I don’t want to spend a lot on them, because I don’t wear them that often.
Fortunately I have a couple of months before my trip.
I have this beach vacation coming up. Which is my daughter’s wedding.
With a bunch of different activities.
I have athletic clothing and golf outfits.
So it’s been completely different than what I would wear day to day. And warmer.
I bought a few things on Poshmark. And buy sell trade boards on facebook.
Because bright colored light clothing is not what I wear day to day. I didn’t even have a bathing suit.
I bet you have some outfits that can be dressed up with a scarf. Or a dressier top.
I have sailed on two river cruises with Viking and the dress code is very relaxed. I wore jeans and tshirts with good walking shoes for the daily excursions. For dinner, I changed into the single pair of lightweight black slacks that I packed as well as dressier top (think blouse) and my shoes to ballet flats. However, everyone was casual and not dressy.
Enjoy your cruise!
I bought a midi length black jersey dress from Velvet a season or two ago, and it is pretty versatile depending on belt, scarf, sweater/jacket, jewelry, shoes. Something like that might do the trick. (This one is similar but self-belts.)
The nice thing is it’s comfortable for day and not too casual for night.
Lots of overthinking here—river cruises are NOTHING like ocean cruises–the accent is on CASUAL.
We have taken 2 river cruises (Rhine, tulip cruise), and as long as you don’t look like a slob you will fit in. Men: collared shirts at dinner, ‘neat’ jeans are seen and are OK, most men wear chino type pants. Women wear slacks and a nice top.
On excursions I wear LL Bean Cresta hiking pants–if I have time I change into chinos for dinner, but often I have just worn the same pants–no problem.
Dresses, suits, sports jackets are seldom seen–those who wear them look very overdressed compared to everyone else.
Granted, this is a male point-of-view.
I love that dress, gardenstatelegal! Looks very flattering!
There is no such thing as overthinking fashion and outfits. Entire industries are built on that…
I agree. Casual, but clean and neat. Majority of passengers were around our age (60s) or older. My husband wore an assortment of polo shirts. He also had hiking pants (mostly for day), chinos and jeans. There were some dresses at dinner but most women wore nice pants.
Seriously comfortable. Think, what other sandal could you ever go on a long, steep hike with, and get zero blisters? I never could actually imagine hiking with sandals, but I had my big toenail removed, which was very painful, and it was excruciating for even socks to touch it. We went to Hawaii the day after I got it removed, and our plan was to do a long hike the next day. I thought I was in big trouble, and those sandals saved me! You can walk forever in them, comfortably.
Bring two pairs of very comfortable nonskid soled walking shoes. That way, when a pair gets soaked, you have a dry pair for the next day, while the wet pair dries out.
There are many YouTube videos that real passengers have posted and you can see what people really wear, not what is shown in an advertisement or promotional video. I hope you have a wonderful trip - we leave in October 2025 for our Viking cruise!
