Oops, sorry I miscalculated the money.
*i am gonna pay 60k$ totally more to attend Connecticut College than to attend Rhodes College and I am wondering is it worth?
“Worth it” is hard to say. It really depends on your family circumstances. And you have 2 (or 3) great choices. YOUR preferences, and the cost, are what it comes down to. The schools are different, but you can see, all very respected institutions (Wisconsin does have a higher international profile). Just weigh what you’ve read here in terms of your family circumstances and personal preferences. You will be living and studying in one of these places, not your family and not all of us.
Is the price difference easily affordable for your family?
Does weather make much of a difference to you? New London will have big snowstorms most winters and lots of mornings with temp in teens or twenties (Fahrenheit). Memphis will probably be hot in September, but students can often just wear light jackets much of the winter, though it certainly gets cold sometimes.
Both Rhodes and Conn Coll are small LAC communities with close collaboration between students and professors. Wisconsin is almost a small city in itself and closely integrated into Madison.
More to do in Memphis or Madison on a Friday or Saturday night, but New London is closer to NYC and Boston for weekend trips. Some students would never want to make a weekend trip, or could not afford to do it much. Others would want to do it a lot.
With some typical prudence and caution, all are safe communities where you and your family can feel that you will be okay. It doesn’t sound like there is much difference here.
Tennessee in general will be more socially and politically conservative than Connecticut, though I’m guessing the Rhodes community will be more socially and politically liberal than the state in general.
Rhodes and Wisconsin have a business major, Connecticut does not.
Good luck and let us know what you decide. When do you have to let the schools know? It seems like it would be now.
This is a no-brainer to me - the cost difference alone is worth it. If you look at US News (not a great source but it is one source…) Conn College is ranked below Rhodes. Furthermore, if you want business - do you? Rhodes has a great business major (and a fifth year accountancy program as I recall, if you head in that direction…) and a terrific internship program. The faculty at BOTH colleges are awesome…and graduate school placement is terrific at both as well. The difference (beyond sticker price) as you noted and from my vantage point is life-style. Conn has NO greek system which is very appealing to many. Rhodes does have a very active Greek system (but non-residential so everyone lives with everyone and that’s great) and I don’t see it as a stigma…it feels like a cohesive community. Conn is tucked away on the Connecticut Shore (lovely) with train access to NYC and Boston (you’d have to ask Con kids if they actually leave campus to do stuff), and Rhodes (also a lovely campus) is in a much more vibrant and dynamic city with a ton of cultural offerings. So it depends on where you want to go to school (NE or South) and what kind of experience you want to carve out. You noted etter a cappella groups at Conn - I do know that the Rhodes Singers (more traditional) travel and are really noted for their excellence so music is alive and well as is theater at RHodes…and maybe an opportunity for you to make any group even stronger!! As for safety…others have said it…there are parts of any city you don’t go to. Same with Hopkins/Baltimore: Occidental/LA…Trinity/Hartford…yadayada…be aware you are in a metro area…! So, it feels like you should have made a decision…did both plaecs give you an extension? What you can’t do is save a space at both. For one, it’s “against the rules and ethical fair play” but also, think of the poor kid who wants off the WL at one of these and you took two spots…anyhow, you’ve been given a TON of advice and really thoughtful advice, at that. Let us know what you decide! GOOD LUCK…
Hi everyone. I almost chose Rhodes as my destination. But today I got another offer from Franklin&Marshall College off the waitlist. But they provide less financial aid (28k/year) than rhodes(40k/year). I want to hear some comments about these two colleges. Is F&M stronger academically(for sociology and business)?
They are similar except the locations. In my perspective, F&M is better than rhodes (and concoll) overall. Any divergent perspectives?
US News ranks Rhodes #44, and Franklin & Marshall is ranked #47.
I think Rhodes, Conn College and F&M are peers. If you like Rhodes, I would choose Rhodes due to the money you’ll save over the others.
I would like Rhodes for business and sociology because what is available in the area in terms of internships and volunteering.
Hi everyone, I chose to attend Rhodes finally. Thanks for providing me so many advice and you all really helped me a lot!!!
Congrats, a wonderful school! We know several very successful Rhodes recent grads, who have gone on to great opportunities, and loved their time on campus.
Good luck, have a wonderful time!
Great choice with Rhodes I have two there. One joining in your year.
