Rice does not admit by major or school. Though they like to know what the kids plan to major in, they are not really held to it. They don’t have to declare a major until end of sophomore year, though some majors like you to declare sooner if possible. Lots of kids change majors their first year or two and it’s very easy to do.
My daughter was admitted last year and unless I’ve forgotten, I don’t think they sent shirts. She did get one at admitted student day. But, everything is so different this year and they aren’t holding on campus events so maybe more will come in the mail. I know they are planning virtual events because the currently students have gotten emails about participating in those.
My daughter was rejected but I was wondering how many violinist were admitted to Rice this year?
@kostabosk Impressive list of colleges you got in! Well done!! Did you get accepted to Rice?
@PrdMomto1,thank you so much for the info. Have a nice day and be safe!
@paigerydler When I was looking around my portal, I got a pop-up saying Rice wanted to send me a shirt. I selected my size and they said they’d be mailing it!
When my daughter was accepted they did not send out shirts. But she did get a few during O week.
If anyone else is stuck trying to get out of the t-shirt tab on the Rice Admissions portal, click on the t-shirt size you want, then hit tab a couple times until you think you’re on the “enter” button (even though it’s probably off-screen).
We can’t find a t-shirt tab… does that only show up after you accept an offer?
One point of data for you… the President’s Honor Roll recognizes approximately the top 30% of eligible undergrad GPAs each semester. Fall 2019 cutoff was 3.90. (NB grading scale goes up to 4.0 - they used to award 4.3 for A+ but that stopped a few years ago.) Essentially a student can only get one or two A minuses to make the honor roll (and no B+'s). More info is available here: https://registrar.rice.edu/students/aca_honors
I was pretty surprised how high the cutoff was - means 30% of the students are essentially receiving straight As.
dang lol that’s NOT me
@delynnel Possibly so. I was accepted ED but the t-shirt option only popped up on the portal after RD results had been sent out. For me, it wasn’t a tab on the portal, but just a box that popped up on the page whenever I logged onto the portal.

I’m struggling to choose between UNC, Hopkins, and Rice. unc is significantly cheaper than either of them. I’m thinking about doing bme or neuroscience (possibly pre-med) - any advice or thoughts on the pros/cons of the schools?
