Rice Class of 2027 Official Thread

Got excited for a sec

haha we all did. they srsly need to stop this lol

Did not receive any emails, but was deferred from ED so I think it might be a separate email list from the RD applicant pool.

Anyone know what day Rice will announce regular decisions.

DD’s not home to ask, but I believe I read April 1 somewhere.

Did any of your DCs get a recent email about Rice’s commitment to the community?

DD has been getting Rice emails periodically. The last one was about a week ago, featuring the city of Houston. However, DD did not get a ā€œcommitment to the communityā€ email, which may have come after the Houston one.

Rice always comes out last week or so of march. It will be out between 23rd and 27th

I see in the ā€œResultsā€ section of this website that it would be March 24th. May be they have estimated the dates for all the results based on past years.

I’m not sure how Rice decides to whom to send which email. I scoured through 2026 thread and there was lots of discussion about emails. People reported receiving different emails, and for those who reported both their decision results and email receipts, it seemed to be a random pattern that didn’t obviously correlate with admission decisions. Some people received emails and were later rejected. Some people did not receive emails and were later accepted. If anyone has better insight please share! I’m very curious now.

We did not receive this either. How did you know to ask about it? What was different from the other emails they’ve been sending?

Can you post a copy? We did not receive this, and I’m wondering what made it stand out from previous emails…

My best guess is that the marketing emails are sent on a scheduled send timeline until a decision (any decision) is entered into the system for the applicant. That would explain why different people continue to get marketing emails and others stop getting them. It would also explain why the deferred candidates are not getting them anymore.

I’m wondering if the Houston email went to out-of-state families and the commitment to community email went to in-state?

People sometimes have the misconception that Rice decides who to admit early on and then carefully curates its email lists to stealth-signal who’ll receive favorable news down the road. This is not the case. The hard-working admissions officers don’t complete their task until shortly before the deadline and you can fall off email lists for any number of reasons unrelated to the decision you’ll eventually receive. Anxiety is understandable at this point but the best thing everyone can do is hope for admission to Rice while fully exploring backup options in case things don’t go your way. Best wishes and good luck to everyone!

I hope so! We are in Houston and have not gotten any emails in a long time! We have several family members who went to Rice including my daughter, so I’m really hopeful for my son’s chances there and am trying not to put too much thought into why he’s not getting any new marketing emails from them.:joy:

That’s so hard to do! This is our first time down the admissions path (son is an only child). Very stressful process for the parents (kid is chill)

My son is so laid back about the whole thing! He seems so relaxed about it all, definitely doesn’t get that from me! It’s my third and I’m more stressed than ever! Hahaha
I’m worried not getting emails means we are off the list or maybe it means we are moved to another list? Or maybe means nothing at all. I went to the Rice website and filled out the request for information form again just in case…not sure why I thought that was necessary, but maybe now he’ll get those emails again?
Honestly just can’t wait to get the waiting part over and move on to the fun part of him visiting schools, choosing, celebrating, etc.

My post wasn’t clear and I apologize for creating confusion.

DD has received a few emails from Rice since submitting her RD application. The most recent one was an email promoting Houston. I think another one was for business studies (though DD is interested in engineering). We weren’t trying to read anything into these emails, but it’s hard. Rice is definitely DD’s top choice.

Anyway, because this is an anonymous forum, I’ll admit that I’ve also been checking Reddit for college news and updates. I have to laugh at myself, because it seems a bit over the top, but I’m doing it anyway. On the Rice University ā€œApplying to Collegeā€ Reddit forum, someone posted that they had received an email about Rice’s ā€œcommitment to the community.ā€ This would have been within the past week, sent after the Houston email. It seems that at least one other poster in the Rice forum had gotten the email, or - rather - their DC had. DD did not get that email.

DD also applied to MIT and she does get a monthly MIT newsletter type of thing, but the Rice emails seemed in a different category (to me, anyway). None of DD’s other pending colleges are sending emails, except for FA matters. Since DD didn’t get that commitment to the community email, I wondered how widespread the email was.

On Reddit, someone did a deep-dive into past Rice threads and concluded that receipt of emails post-application-submission didn’t seem to mean anything. Some students who received emails were rejected. Some who never received emails were accepted.

Anyway, the last email here in our house was Houston-related. If anyone got the ā€œcommitment to communityā€ email, I’d love to know when it was sent and if several DCs received it.

Another thing I’ve read on Reddit concerns some type of IDOCC (sp?) download verifying parental income. Not specifically for Rice, but for other colleges, it appears that some students DO have such a download and some do not. (This would appear in the FA section of the student’s portal.) For Rice, DD does not have such a download. However, I have NO idea if this means anything or not. DD and DH handled all the FA work and I, obviously, handle all the neurotic Reddit stalking. I didn’t mention any of this to DD because there’s no point. It’s out of our hands.

Good luck to all! At least in our house, March promises to be rather stressful, but DD’s expectations are realistic. She has a couple of good safeties and we assume she’ll be attending one of them.

I totally feel you! I think a lot of us parents are more anxious about this process than our kiddos. For my own mental health, this month I’m going to start limiting my social media time and enjoying a nightly glass of vino… :face_with_spiral_eyes::crazy_face:
