Rice Fall 2015 Transfer

@ElmerChelmo Hi, I am still on wait list. Can you show me the address of the website where you find the description of ideal student? I fail to find it on official website.

@Brian0129 Is this what you are looking for? http://futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Student_Profiles.asp

@Miyamoto Amazing! I was admitted last week! Brandon emailed every transfer wait listed student and asked everyone 3 questions. I think I have him good answers!

I maybe too late to have this reply. Congrats to all got accepted to Rice. My daughter got 4 wait lists including Rice for freshmen application major in BME and then only one asked her to change major to get off wait list. She decided to go to UT with premed. Is there anyone here got transferred from UT to Rice? @CollegeKid0108, What’s your majo?

@FrustratedDad I understand the frustration that you and your daughter must be feeling. I got waitlisted from 6 schools when I applied as a freshman, and never really heard back from any of them. I wasn’t really expecting to get off the waitlist, but I was still hopeful. I ended up attending a state school, and I actually started to like my school a lot. I realized that my school has a lot of opportunities and great professors, and deciding to transfer was a very tough decision for me.

I applied as a bioengineering major (+premed), but I think I’m going to do mechanical engineering. Rice claims that your major doesn’t matter that much when applying since it isn’t binding, but I don’t know how truthful that is. I didn’t attend UT, but I did go to a state school in the Northeast. If your daughter wants to transfer, I suggest for her to do well her first two semesters, write a good essay with a legitimate reason why she wants to transfer (better opportunities at a better school doesn’t quite cut it, avoid cliche stuff), and most importantly, GET TO KNOW SOME PROFESSORS. Go to office hours, participate in class, etc. so that they can write her a good recommendation letter, and if she doesn’t end up transferring, she’ll have good relationships with professors. She may feel awkward doing all that for a rec letter, but most professors will understand, want what’s best for her and support what she ultimately decides to do.

Also, don’t procrastinate with the applications. I didn’t decide whether or not to apply as a transfer until a few weeks before the deadline, and filling out all the applications was awful. I honestly don’t know how I got into Rice because I submitted some documents late, wrote mediocre essays, and one of my rec letters wasn’t submitted until a month after the deadline. However, I did attend an admitted students event with a high school friend who was admitted at that point. There, I met an admissions officer, introduced myself, and expressed my interest in Rice. It was a bit risky going to an event for admitted students when I wasn’t admitted yet, but I think that definitely help me.

The bad part about transferring is that schools won’t give you that much financial aid, and in the case of Rice, transfer students aren’t even considered for merit scholarships. That also made my decision tough.

After her first semester, your daughter may not want to even apply because she may make close friends or like the campus or something of the like. But, tell her to still apply. I didn’t really want to transfer when I applied, but I’m so glad that I did. Leaving friends and a familiar place will be hard, but in the end it may be worth it.

What other schools is she interested in? And if I may ask, what schools did she get waitlisted from?

@CollegeKid0108, thanks for the reply. She got other wait lists from Wash U in St. Louis, Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins asked her to change major to get off the wait list.

Hi guys! I wasn’t the “best” high school, more like very very average with around 3.5 uw & 3.8 w gpa, but with decent load of extracirriculars. I got into some schools, but realized that they weren’t what I actually wanted, so I chose community college, and now I’m in love love love with Rice! I would love to transfer, and I am taking a decent load of credits (16 semester units!) and an internship along with a hopeful hospital volunteer at Stanford (interview coming up soon!) Unfortunately, RICE doesn’t accept Chem or English from community college (ha ha ha both classes im taking), so will that effect my chances, I mean I don’t mind retaking them at RICE? But most of all, do you guys think that my choice to go community college will effect my chances, actually do I even have a chance LOL Any tips of what else I can do to strengthen my application? I was considering retaking my ACT (current score 28, superscored 29), would it be worth it? (pretty sure i can surpass 30, high school was a very rough patch) I know this is long but I would truly appreciate any help

Hello, I am a fall 2016 transfer and I wanted to know if that asked for your final transcript. I would be going into my second year of college in fall 2016
