@riversider, thanks but I’m not really looking for parenting advice. We’re a really close knit homeschool family and we’ll make a decision that makes sense for us logistically (either my husband has to take 3 days off work so he can be at home with the kids, or else I take all the kids and they get a visit with grandparents and cousins while she and I are at Rice each day.) She’s definitely not the type to be picky about that kind of thing.
It wasn’t meant to be a parenting advice. I shared it as at a recent trip to another college, I saw some children overwhelming their parents and embarrassing admitted student. It felt like a good tip for first time college parents. I’m sorry if you found it offensive.
I’m not offended. I just thought it was odd. I mean, I’m not going to drag a 5-year-old through a college campus all day long lol! We’re used to thinking through all these factors with a big family.
So, who’s gonna need extra chocolate on hand this week?? ?♀️ Thursday is gonna be tough for a ton of our kids and tomorrow is at least separate from that decision overwhelm but will still leave some (many) disappointed. Weird timing at our house because the Rice decision tomorrow comes like 20 minutes before we have to leave for a special reception for the honors program at the school she will be attending assuming no acceptances this week. She’ll have to take the news, clear her head, and then go and be social with the students and faculty at the school which really did want her. Lot of emotional whiplash this week! I feel for the kids. It’s a lot to process.
In the past Rice has offered a few admitted student one-day programs in addition to Owl Days. It is a busy time of year and Owl Days can be too much of a time commitment for some. They have a student track and a parent track at those days also. The students have an opportunity to attend class, eat in the dining halls etc. My daughter attended the one day program not Owl Days.
Guys where can I find my admissions portal?? I’m sorry, I’m lost.
Good luck to everyone today! If you’re admitted, congratulations: Rice is a wonderful school and may be the best fit for you. If you’re not admitted, there will be other open doors. Pick the door that best fits you, and then what happens after you go through is up to you. All the best!
The link to the portal is on the most recent email they sent!
Try riceadmission.rice.edu/apply and see if that works.
@Houston1021 If you couldn’t make the Owl Days, would it be worth it to fly down for the one day program?
I’m an international student and I’m really nervous now lol
@awesomepolyglot reported on the ED thread that Owl Days may be only Thursday and Friday this year (in the past it has been Wednesday-Friday). Not much longer to wait!
@TheBigGrapeFruit if you are trying to decide between Rice and another school, the trip might be worth it. This is assuming Rice offers the one day program again this year. If you have already visited campus, and/or are sure about your decision, you could skip it. My daughter was trying to decide between two schools. She couldn’t go to Owl Days because of high school commitments, so she went to the one day program. As soon as it was over, she was ready to enroll at Rice.
Very frustrated parent here ? we are waiting on a decision today but have very little hope. Daughter has 1500 SATs, WGPA of 5+, lots of arts extracurriculars, we are from the Northeast, she loves what she has read about the collaborative culture at Rice and is interested in the kinesiology major. The reason for my frustration is that I feel like I gave her bad advice. Two of her reach schools, Rice included, turned into outright impossible-to-get-into schools immediately after she applied because of new pricing structures appealing to the middle class. At least $200 and countless hours down the drain ? she actually looked at me last night when I was bringing her down to reality and said “so basically what you are saying is that I just effectively applied to Yale? GREAT…” this whole college admissions game is so draining and exhausting! Good luck to everyone and may you all find the right fit ?
Always keep hope alive!
@lucyjo I don’t get it… why are you upset that rice has now made themselves accessible to middle and low class students?
@lucyjo Good luck to your daughter! I also applied as a kinesiology major, and it’s always nice to see others with similar interests.
A quick question for Owl days: Can we come at Thursday morning and leave at Friday night? Is there any Thursday morning activities we might miss? Or it is better to come at Wednesday night? Is there any invitation for Owl Day? My son was accepted in ED. Thanks!!!

Hi @washdcgorl ? think my post was a little unclear so let me clarify… We are right in the income bracket that this new policy would help! In fact, even application fees are a hardship for us, as are touring schools / interviewing and that sort of thing. So I had to be incredibly careful about what schools to keep on her list, which had to be a short list because we don’t have a ton of money for application fees. I really tried to work with her to get a couple matches, a couple reaches and a couple safeties, but with the new policy, which is awesome, there are so many applicants that she really has very little chance of getting in. In other words, Rice went from being a healthy long shot to being unrealistic for her. And I felt like I wasted her time by giving her bad advice ? I hope that helps clarify! Thanks…
@lucyjo I feel the same way as you in a sense that this admission cycle is crazy. My son has a 36 ACT 4.0 UW GPA, 12 APs with all 5s but 2 4s. National level extracurriculars in Ballroom dance. So far he has been accepted to UVA, weight listed by University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, and WASHU and then rejected by Northwestern. We are waiting on several responses this week including Rice and are simply unsure what to think. We are a suburban middle-class family. My son has had a pretty good life without a lot of bad that has happened to him. His parents are married and both attended college. He has no hooks, no tragedies to speak of etc. We will see what happens this week but we are pretty discouraged by the nature of college admissions at these top tier schools and the disadvantage that is faced by really smart normal kids who have lived pretty good lives. We don’t have enough money to donate massive amounts of money to school but we have enough to make it so he doesn’t have any hooks, etc.
