We visited in November of his senior year. He had an on campus interview and lunch with current students. He liked Rice but did not love it. It wasn’t until he visited again in February during the Vision program that he got a better feel for the school environment and the students. Rice is smaller (935/class vs 1700/class at Duke). My son felt more comfortable with the Rice environment and the residential college system vs the Greek system at Duke. He is pre-med and the med school admission rates for both undergraduate schools are phenomenal (about 90% for both schools). In addition, the Texas Medical Center is across the street. From our discussions and his first semester involvement with fellow classmates (from freshmen to seniors), it is NO fluke that Rice undergraduates are rated the happiest students. We are from Ohio and visited him twice (Parents Week-end and Centennial Celebration). Houston is so much fun with many restaurants, shops and museums to visit. Lastly, we were very very fortunate that he was awarded a Trustee merit scholarship which essentially “sealed the deal.”
