Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

Bringing it back to colleges, a cruise ship was how St Mary’s College of Maryland housed students who were displaced from a dorm that needed unexpected repairs.
For the Olympics, I would think that would be an ideal way to house visitors but would it be more secure or less? I can’t decide.

The dorm S lived in at USoCal was used in the Olympics decades prior in LA. It was a nice, solid dorm and well-used; definitely not a shack. It had built in safes in each side of the room for stashing valuables and a washer/dryer on each floor.

If a fire or flood destroyed one of the Olympic venues shortly before the Games, or if some sort of nearby industrial accident contaminated a venue with toxic substances, I think that arrangements would be made to hold the competitions somewhere else, even if it meant that they would take place in another country – perhaps one that often hosts the world championships in that sport and has the appropriate facilities.

I don’t understand why Rio isn’t taking the same approach to the competitions that are scheduled to take place in venues that have been rendered unfit for use by sewage.

Now apparently water quality in the training POOL is being questioned:

So many events on today! Am looking forward to the women’s soccer, swimming, and basketball. Watching some archery and fencing at the moment and the men’s road race final is on shortly.

Watched a bit of the cycling before I had to leave and was glad to hear the TDF broadcasting crew. Weird not to see Froome in either yellow or Sky black.

The cycling! So stressful! But fun to watch! I wonder what % of riders wiped out??

The official Rio app is incredible. I’m “watching” the road race and getting real time info about every bike change (poor Molemma!), puncture, chase, and abandon.

On roads like those, the guys need mountain bikes!!! Yikes about the cobblestones and unfinished paving!

They hate the cobbles more than anything.

I wonder why this is a one day event? Seems like they could run it for the full duration of the Olympics or at least for a week like the Tour of California.

Nice prelim swim for Dana Vollmer! 56.6ish? Awesome.

So Mr R and I have been together for 5 or 6 years and I just learned this morning that he likes volleyball. Specifically beach volleyball- both men’s and women’s. I played volleyball for many years and somehow this never came up.

I get Canadian channels here so thanks for the tip to check out those channels!

Yeah, my husband likes women’s beach volleyball, too. I wonder why.

The cycling was really exciting today. Great chance for us viewers to see a lot of the surrounding area. Some great scenery. That descent was intense - the motorcycle wasn’t able to keep up with the bikes and missed the decisive crash.

Loved watching the women’s soccer, US-France: exciting! And those “Zikaaaaa” yells every time Hope Solo handled the ball… hmmmm

Lol @doschicos I had the same thought but he was just as interested in men’s. Although…

We’re enjoying the swimming. Mr R and I were both back and free swimmers. Watching people swim breast and butterfly is just amazing to us. Neither of us have the needed upper body strength.

Another heads up: if anyone has UVERSE, there is a channel where you can watch 4 events simultaneously and pick up to 5 of your favorite events to keep track of.

Swimming spoilers!

Hungarian female swimmer Katinka Hosszu just destroyed the 400M individual medley world record.

I cheer for the Hungarian athletes too since it’s the only part of my heritage that I identify with lol.

My H loves women’s beach volleyball too. He had a mad crush on Misty May.

I missed almost all the day’s broadcast, so just watching the NBC evening packaged events.

The Hungarian swimmer is amazing.

Talking about Hungarians I watched Hungarian table tennis player winning his first round match. He is 37 and wears bandana. He beat a Kazakh player. Every time Kazakh player toweled himself his coach toweled himself too.

Women table tennis players are not undressed enough to watch.
