Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

The men are well on their way to “100” with 75 in the 3rd quarter. Serbia, 40.

Not motivated enough to score higher.

Ok, so we have all watched the Olympics but which sport are you willing to try?
How about diving? In this buzzfeed video regular people attempt the Olympic dives.

I hear a lot of people giving the US Basketball team a lot of grief over being there and saying that they are pros and shouldn’t be playing and all that. Did the individual players make the decision that they should be there? Nope. They were invited to go and represent the US even though they are pro. Why wouldn’t they want to go and appear in the Olympics? Out of the # of professional basketball players it is still an elite opportunity to have the chance to experience.

I understand not supporting that the pros be there. But the individual players don’t make those decisions.

Thanks @raclut, that was fun to watch.

It is interesting though how the level of participants varies from sport to sport. In addition to basketball, you have tennis players like the Williams sisters and Nadal competing. In soccer, the majority of the top players in the world don’t, with a few exceptions like Neymar who is still relatively young.

^^^True.

I guess it’s because the monetary reward is not high enough to attract professional players. Neymar is a special case. He was injured in the 2012 Olympics and had no chance to win. He also needed to help Brasil to restore its name in soccer.

Javelin - I threw in college. Fun, yes, but much harder than it looks!

I’m a tennis fan, and I think it’s cool that many of the world’s top tennis players seem happy to compete in the Olympics.

I am thinking of buying an Olympic air pistol …

@doschicos In soccer they are allowed to only have something like 3 players over a certain age on each team (I think the age is 23). That’s one reason some of the top players in the world aren’t there.

I’ve enjoyed this Olympics very much due to being able to stream events live I otherwise wouldn’t have seen. Enjoyed the triathlon and mountain biking yesterday and the marathon this morning. Some great track results for the US in the last few days too.

Has anyone given a huge shout out to our women’s basketball team?! So many assists and a lot less ego than the guys.

I hate that the women gymnasts are expected to be perky and cute and bubbly. It’s somehow ok that Katy Ledecky is more outwardly quiet and determined. But if Gabby Douglass is not all smiles, she’s deemed a poor sport.

Absent the few athletes who felt they needed to get out of Dodge, I don’t really get why some athletes choose to leave before the end. If I was them I’d love to go to other events and stick around for the closing ceremony.

I’m a little depressed. I always get sad when the Olympics are over. Four more years to wait for the next one…

Only 2 for the Winter Olympics, @Scipio!

I agree. I think it’s kind of rude to rush off. Plus wouldn’t they want to hang out, soak everything up and watch all the other sports? ? Maybe there are ‘shifts’ in the athlete village? I’ve often wondered if they have to move out after your sport to make room for track and field athletes or something.

For me the Winter Olympics is weak sauce compared to the summer games.

So far the closing ceremonies are underwhelming. Looks like a HS halftime show with band formations.
