Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

@Scipio Well, let’s see… Stanford 27 + Cal 21 + USC 21 + UCLA 9 = 78. So, they are in 2nd place just counting 4 out of the 12 colleges. Not sure who is doing their math… lol. Or maybe their list (per your link) only counts current students vs current students + alum. But you are right… it is impressive either way. ESPN this morning was the ones to first mention it (them being 2nd)… citing the #s in this post.

I can’t believe how stupid Lochte was, the whole stuff with the gas station might have been embarrasing, but it was a relatively trivial case of vandalism that likely would have had a lot less impact on him then in lying the way he did. Put it this way, the Rio cops if they were called onto the scene of what happened, would be very likely to find a way to make it go away, have the morons pay for the damage they did, tell the owner to be happy he was paid for the damage, and leave it at that. By claiming that he was robbed, feeding into all the negative (and often true) issues with Rio, there was a lot of hurt pride and he made it so they were going to do everything they could to put the hurt on him. I understand that people like Lochte live in a kind of bubble, a world of coaches and meets and sponsors and so forth, but somewhere along the lines he didn’t learn important lessons about standing up and being accountable, and that when you try to duck stupid things like this it ends up biting you. He only made it worse when he talked to Bob Costas, he basically was claiming he didn’t know, he thought they were being robbed, he never really apologized or owned up to what he and his buddies did that night.

@WWWard I think the difference comes from counting the number of event medals that Pac-12 affiliates (not just current students) won, which was 55, vs. the number of Pac-12 athletes who took home medals, which was 92.

The difference can be accounted for by the team sports. For example, the women’s 4x100 track relay counts as 1 event gold medal of the 55 total. But all athletes on the team are counted as taking home a gold medal which would include at least two different Pac-12 schools USC (Allyson Felix) and Oregon (English Gardner). Team member Jenna Prandini (Oregon) also ran in the prelims and thus also earned a medal. So for just the women’s 4x100 we get 1 event Pac-12 medal (out of 55) and 3 individual Pac-12 medals (out of 92).

@MomofJandL She really didn’t sound off to a reporter, it was more of a fluke thing than that:
http://www.si.com/olympics/2016/08/21/ryan-lochte-robbery-story-rio-olympics-ben-way

Her son has been in the international spotlight long enough for her to know to keep her mouth shut about his activities in front of anyone but close family. She can’t recognize a press pass? But maybe he gets his critical thinking skill from his mama. Bless her heart.

Yeah, he shouldn’t have lied to his mom and yeah the mom shouldn’t have spoken out about it but the biggest mistakes were the next steps when he continued the lie to the media and then to the police. There were many points along the way that Lochte could have corrected the story. It’s the continual lack of judgment and the inability to think about the consequences for himself and others that define how badly he messed up.

I’m sure his pretty face and athletic prowess have created too much privilege over the years resulting in the 32 year old man-child we see today.

@Scipio good explanation

This all could have been avoided if they had not become drunk and disorderly in the first place.

Of course this could have been avoided if the athletes had not misbehaved in the first place.

But since this is the Parent Cafe, I thought it might be useful to change the conversation from "How should overindulged young professional athletes behave? (since I don’t think we have any regular posters who fit that description) to “How should parents of young people behave?”, since we have quite a few of those on this forum.

And sometimes the best thing we can do is not make everything our kids tell us public. That should have been pounded into the Lochte family’s skull for years. The helpful gentlemen on the courtesy bus in Rio with the press credentials hanging on their neck are not your friends. And when your son is a superstar, keep your mouth shut and let his agent and publicist and coach decide whether to gossip about the crime problem in Rio.

My kids aren’t professional athletes or entertainers, but I post nothing about them on Facebook (not quite such a pristine record on this site), and I carefully filter what information gets passed even to family. Their lives, their stories, their decisions on what to share.

I have a question for all of you: I understand why the equestrian events are not gender specific (the horse doesn’t care) but why are the shooting events separated? Do men and women shoot differently?

They’re not gender specific for the horses, either.

Can’t wait for Tokyo 2020! We plan on being there.

On the topic of non-gender-specific sports, too bad there isn’t non-gender-specific media coverage

There was also this sexism collection compiled by the NY Times:

And here is the Wide World of Sexism which introduced me to the term bro-appropriating:

ETA - isn’t Andy Murray the best?

@greenwitch

The female Chinese silver medalist diver who got a marriage proposal while she was standing on the medals podium should kick that guy’s butt into Mongolia. What a jerk to steal her limelight and make it all about him.

BBC tweeted:
“An even bigger prize than her silver medal”

^ I think the whole idea of a marriage proposal at the Games is tacky, or at the very least trite. Do you really have to tell the whole world about it?

Both of those divers are veterans and are recipients of numerous Olympic golds, so I doubt winning a silver meant much to her.

I disagree with that. An Olympic medal- whatever “color” certainly means something to the athletes. There may be initial disappointment if it isn’t the one you thought you would get, but it’s still the pinnacle of your sport.

Surely this sexist headline has been posted http://www.vox.com/2016/8/16/12490360/rio-olympics-2016-katie-ledecky-michael-phelps-sexist-headline

http://www.sbs.com.au/comedy/article/2016/08/16/subtle-sexism-behind-headline-rio

I’m going to defend that paper a bit. The clips rarely show that there’s a picture of Ledecky above the headline. You can see the cutline in the link. Like it or not, Phelps was a much-better known name than Ledecky at that point in the games. I think the people who crop out the picture are being a little misleading.
