Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

For those of you who streamed, did you have to endure the repetitive commercials that I had on my computer? For the pole vault, I had the same commercial after EVERY attempt. It was probably only ten second commercial but 50 of the same thing was more than annoying.

We have Cox cable here in SoCal and our streaming through the NBC site was definitely live. And I agree that the commentary was better than on the NBC prime time telecast.

NBC prime time is a ‘show’. It is plotted, planned, and produced and advertisers paid for entertainment coverage. The streaming, and announcing that went with it, is sports coverage. Things go wrong, there are time outs, there are weather conditions, etc.

The time difference was only an hour from east coast prime time, but 4 hours difference in California. Do you think people in NY wanted the gymnastics shown live from 3-6 pm? How about in California, showing the big events at noon? Where’s the money in that?

One reason that men’s gymnastics probably gets less coverage is because the audience for women’s gymnastics is much larger than for the men’s competition. Don’t know the exact figures but there are 20 times as many girls across the country who do gymnastics at various levels than boys in gymnastics programs. USA Gymnastics is the giverning body for both and puts more of its resoueces toward developing women’s gymnastics.

There were some short commercials, but I never saw anything that frequent. This was using a Roku.

We have Verizon Fios - I watched rhythmic gymastics streaming on the computer. Hardly any advertising. And I agree the commentary was strictly about the sports not all the froufrou stuff. I think there was a fair amount on the other NBC stations during the day, but I didn’t go looking for it.

I thought the coverage was better than in the past. Far less up close and personal nonsense.

Danell Leyva on the attention that the female gymnasts receive:

This is from an old broadcast but is being rehashed online. I hadn’t seen it before but it cracked me up. Lochte interview at his best/worst?

I don’t find men’s gymnastics nearly as entertaining as women’s.

Hope Solo suspended for 6 months

@doschicos , that video was hysterical. Thanks!

The Hopo Solo punishment was disproportionate. Wow! I hope they fight it.

I wasn’t impressed with the sportsmanship of either Hope Solo or swimmer Lilly King.

doschicos, that was amazing!!! Thanks for sharing the link. He rivals Ozzie in his interview skills.

Lily King said what needed to be said.

@gouf78

I thought this opinion piece was interesting: http://ijr.com/opinion/2016/08/259563-former-nypd-officer-heres-believe-ryan-lochtes-version-events/

I’m happy to see that Hope Solo was suspended. As was stated in that article, there’s likely more to the story, and during conversations with her about it after the comments were made, clearly they did not like her answers. She’s a negative on that team and in women’s soccer, and has been for far too long.

And, of course, Ryan Lochte is doing Dancing With The Stars. It was in the works prior to his nonsense in Rio, and apparently has now been confirmed. I suppose he will be thankful for the opportunity to earn some $$ since he’s lost almost all of his sponsors.

My problem with that piece @CTTC is it ignores the fact that, although there may be some gray areas between Locate’s story and the story from the police, Lochte admits he still lied about parts of it. The whole beginning of his original story - told to the media and police - does not match up with them going to the gas station. The author of that piece seems to ignore those details. Not good detective work.

I’m not defending Lochte being drunk but he was. He’s not the first person to not be able to remember how things were played out the night of. He was pressured to say things I’m sure, change his story to make it go away. The Rio cops are corrupt and everyone knew it going in. It was part of the discussion about visiting Rio before the Olympics.

If a policeman (or a guy with some sort of badge rather) is pointing a gun at you demanding cash in a language you don’t understand what would you do and think? The photo evidence that the bathroom was not vandalized. They paid the guy. The rest of the 10K was a cash grab and a farce by authorities as near as I can tell.
