RIP John McCain

I was in DC with my family in 1998 to see my dad receive an honor. While we were there, we sat in the visitors’ gallery in the Senate chamber. It was lunch time and there weren’t many Senators present. But McCain was speaking about legislation concerning internet safety and we were so glad we got to hear him. My oldest son was six at the time and still remembers that day.

May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort in their memories.

20/20 special on McCain is on tonight. It is aptly titled Remembering a Maverick.

RIP, Senator McCain. Godspeed. Your integrity and your dedication to your country is already missed. :frowning:

(GBM sucks.)

I did not agree with him politically but I admired his spirit, his patriotism, and his passion. I also admired his ability to be prickly and stubborn while simultaneously being humorous and fierce. I liked how he was great friends with politicians like Lindsey Graham as well as Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. A complicated man.

He believed in public service, and even if his political beliefs weren’t necessarily my own I respect the man he was. In a way, it feels as if he was the last of a dying breed…

Always an Officer and a Gentleman. He will be missed. RIP

Condolences to his family and our country. Even after unsuccessful runs at the presidency, he remained a formidable and powerful political figure.

I’ve always admired Sen McCain as a hero and patriot who put what he felt was right for the country above partisan politics. It is telling that he has asked former presidents Bush and Obama to give his eulogy. May he rest in peace.

And its telling what other requests he made about his funeral.

We are at USMA this weekend following the class of 2019’s Ring Ceremony, an unfortunate time to be away from home in Arizona. Though our politics differed, I greatly respected Senator McCain and thought him a true hero and leader and a very good man. I think he showed great class right up to the end and very much approve his choice of eulogizers. I also pray for comfort for his family as they grieve their great loss

I was pleasantly surprised a few months months ago when I read that he wanted Obama and “W” to be his eulogizers but didn’t fully appreciate its meaning until an article I just read pointed out that both of those men vanquished him in his quest for the presidency and, by requesting those two, he was performing an act of unification this nation sorely needs. Uncommonly statesmanlike for these times.

Like many here, while I disagreed with much of his politics, I never questioned his patriotism or love of country.

A real has died, a real shame and RIP

A class act!

Vietnam mourns his death:

It speaks to his strength that despite being tortured in Vietnam for 5 years, he was one of the champions of advocating normalizing relations with Vietnam in the 1990s. The removal of sanctions facilitated Vietnam’s economic development, lifting millions out of poverty.

Has anyone read McCain’s farewell statement?
It’s so moving.

His farewell statement was classy and well directed.

Here is the text of his letter—very eloquent:

Thanks for the link @HImom

Wondering if anyone else who is a Hamilton “geek” found the first part of the letter, copied below, to be very similar to Washington’s Farewell Address, parts of which are sung in “One Last Time”? I heard one pundit compare McCain to George Washington over the weekend.

“Thank you for the privilege of serving you and for the rewarding life that service in uniform and in public office has allowed me to lead. I have tried to serve our country honorably. I have made mistakes, but I hope my love for America will be weighed favorably against them.”

In the last few days I have been thinking about how a great man like McCain was raised/created. We need more people like him in this world. A hero for all of us to emulate.
