RIP John McCain

There are people we disagree with on all sorts of topics. Are we really the better person when we celebrate their death or refuse to be respectful merely because they believed differently - esp when they were respectful themselves? Is that what tolerance is all about?

When it involves politics I can’t help but recall the oodles of “why” questions that boggle our minds when we walk Gettysburg’s Battlefields. I guess it helps explains why.

It’s still stupid.

I wish we had more John McCains in Congress (and other offices). There are plenty of others in politics (all levels) I’d like to see gone - some even if I sometimes agree with their politics if personality weren’t an issue. But I can’t imagine any I’d post something to the effect of “good riddance” about if they passed away. Even if I felt it I’d keep it to myself or those I knew who shared my thoughts.

We don’t need to repeat history leaving our great grandchildren pondering why.

I just saw a video of one of McCain’s last public addresses, to the Naval Academy on October 31, 2017. It is about 15 minutes long and worth watching.

This was after his disease was diagnosed, and you can tell his mind is perhaps a half-step slower. But he still shows great humor, his deep understanding of history, and what he believes is American’s essential place in the world. Agree or disagree with his views as you choose, but his love for democracy and his country comes through very clearly.
