Risk it? (word limit question)

Now I know there have been lots of threads about this very topic so I apologize in advance for the repetition.

Here’s the deal: The essay I want to use for my common app is 892 words long, which is clearly too long. HOWEVER, it is without a doubt the best essay I’ve ever written, and I SWEAR it just isn’t the same if I cut any more out. I’ve cut lots and lots of essays down to fit word requirements, but this one just can’t be cut. So, do I risk it and send it as is? My Yale supp essay is about 526 words, so that one’s fine, but I’m just worried that this is pushing it too much. I can make it fit on one page without a problem, if that helps at all. Any advice?

Thanks so, so much!
Lauren :)

First, don’t make the font hard to read. That won’t help by shrinking it.

Are you sure you can’t cut a little more. If you got in the 700s (especially below 750), I would tell you to risk it. However, it is too long now. It would look as though you were openly disregarding their instructions. You could cut it, and put the completed version in the extra info (although I wouldn’t reccomend this for the same essay).

In the end, don’t send in a 900 word essay, its too long. If you can cut 150 words (I bet you can, it may make the writing better), then do it.

Ok, thanks Nickleby. I guess I can try to cut it one more time.

:::Sigh:::

Try finding better words that are more concise.

If you PM me your essay, I can try to see what can be cut out. I have nothing better to do since I’m waiting for my English teacher to email me corrections to the essays I sent her.

lauren…what are u talking about…if it fits within one page…why would u have to cut it down…my essay is also like 850 words and i was worrying…but umm a lot of people told me that their essay was like 800 words and they got into like the top ivies…dont worry dear…like everyone has been saying…if its interesting …then go with it.dont let it loose substance…GL with everything!

My common app essay is around 550 words, but my Yale supp essay is 600-700. Is that a problem?

Don’t worry about it. Don’t cut it down. I got in and mine was 823 words. I’ve posted a lot about essay length, so search the forums if you want a more detailed response.

In short, you should be fine to send it in.

edit: actually, I’ll refer you to some of the posts from this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com…ead.php?t=19986

Hey everyone,

Thanks so, so much for all of the advice. In the end I cut it down by about 100 words, which is still too long but oh well. Honestly I think I made the right decision. Good luck to everyone doing RD and congrats to all the EA acceptees!

:)

hey Lauren, would you mind if I read it, just out of curiousity? HoyaSaxa2009@gmail.com
