Roadside Assistance: AAA vs. Cell Phone Plan?

Yea, our primary motivation at this point is a good long-distance tow package, since who knows where S goes for his rock climbing, if he is the driver (or even a passenger in someone else’s vehicle), altho up until now he’s done just fine w/o anything (& no car).

I also use AAA for discount tickets to the local movie place. Cost at the theater is $9 but $6 at AAA. Last time I bought a 10 pack thinking that young son could use them for himself or to stick a couple in a graduation or birthday card.

Our family chose AAA because they offered us a “one parent plus two minors” package at a reasonable rate. We don’t need maps (good thing too, since AAA office hours are sometimes inconvenient), and we keep the cars in good shape. But my daughters have “issues” with flat tires and lost keys, so the promise of roadside assistance is valuable. We’ve used AAA discounts on occasion.

Ah, another call from the folks, asking us to help them out with their car issue because we have AAA. I was at work & referred them to my sister, who is also an AAA member (to their surprise). I think she helped because I didn’t hear back.

For what it’s worth, I believe in my area at least that the same tow companies are used regardless of who your plan is with. So I wonder about people who say they have had longer waits with AAA. Also the person who has AAA can use the card for any car - his/her own, family member’s, friend’s - as long as he/she is present.
