Hey Jam, don’t be afraid of Horseshoe Bend, just be smart.
The soil there is very striated so people may stand on the edge unaware they are out on a ledge, not on the solid cliff. Yes, it is about 1,000 feet straight down.

Jam, this should make you want to visit the Grand Canyon, then. ;)

There’s actually a pretty thick amount of stone below my feet there. My girlfriend just did a fantastic job with perspective on that shot.

Clever pic RacinReaver. I really wasn’t expecting guard rails all around GC. I’ll be grateful for the rails around the skywalk though. :)

When you visit the GC, be sure to take a walk along the rim away from some of the viewpoints. It gets quiet fairly quickly, and the peacefulness away from the crowds isn’t to be missed. (Also, the view without a rail is pretty spectacular.)

My husband goes to a conference in Las Vegas every year. I go with him because I have really enjoyed day trips/tours to sights in the area. I’d recommend the Hoover Dam visit–I took one of the longer tours–only because I had lots of time. Another time I did a day-long hiking trip in the Red Rock Canyon Conservation area–loved it. Also, did a trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon–while I enjoyed it–doing a day trip from Las Vegas was really long. Two years ago, I went out to Death Valley, which was amazing. If you have any interest in geology this is the trip for you,

RacinReaver - Cool picture. It sure looks scary from the perspective of the camera.

Good idea Bromfield2 - I totally forgot about Red Rock Canyon. I think we rented dune buggies somewhere in that area.
