I spoke to my manager (he’s about twelve years older) about the issue and he’s had extractions and root canals. His wife also has TMJ and said that root canals in the back can be difficult. After listening to me for a bit, he said he’d just do the extraction. The nice thing about having an older manager is that they’ve already been through most of what you’ll be going through.

I made an appointment to have it extracted next week.

Right now it hurts and I don’t have any painkillers around but it’s been hurting on and off for a month so another week should be manageable. Thanks for your replies - I hope to never have to revisit this stuff in the future.

Similar stories, more details than I feel like typing ( and it’s already here somewhere, on some other thread…), but I’ve been told the reason for implaning after an extracted molar is largely related to shifting ( not just side to side, but alos the opposing tooth, up or down), and relatedly, your bite.

I took a long hiatus from the dentist due to being very busy with the kids and high overall stress levels and am working on my health this year as some time has freed up to take care of myself. I’m sure that I wouldn’t have the current problem with this tooth if I had regular checkups and cleanings but I think that crowding still would have been a problem.

I moved the appointment up to tomorrow morning as pain levels increased this afternoon and I’m worry that they will go exponentially higher shortly. Aspirin is next to useless (takes away about 30% of the pain) here so I get to suffer for a bit under a day.

After this is deep root scaling, checkups every three months and fixing a bunch of chipped teeth.

I’ve had one root canal done with no anesthesia. Not all that bad, except that I was hurting mightily and super swollen when I went in, which was how we knew it needed to be done. Year and a half later and no problems. Never had an extraction, so can’t comment on that.

Today had a surface fix that necessitated local numbing, which of course numbs the face.

Dentist’s wife commented that for my age, I don’t have wrinkles.
I said, "that’s expected with the lidocaine. "

I gave the dentist’s office a jar of my homemade jam. Lower in sugar but, very high acid that’s guaranteed to dissolve their teeth. It’s concord grape that’s also gonna stain their whites.

My dentist said the same thing to me last week. Maybe it’s something in the standard comments bag of tricks.

Pain is just something in life to remind you of what you shouldn’t have done in the past and to give you a kick about what you should do in the future.

Maybe we need a health subforum here for all of us over 50.

I have had 4 molars and a wisdom tooth extracted. The 4 molars were before getting braces back in the late 1970’s. They wouldn’t have removed them in today’s orthodontia world, and they shouldn’t have been. There is major shifting now.

However, no problems with any of the extractions. I find the scariest part to be how easy it is to pull a tooth.

I think it’s good that it is not too hard to pull a tooth. We take today’s medical technology for granted now - it’s good that the body can sacrifice a small part in a way that doctors of yesteryear could figure out how to do.

In today’s world, the ortho guys seem pretty eager to pull teeth to give you that good-looking smile.

Went to the dentist’s office this morning and he started going over the risks of extraction. He also expected the extraction to be difficult because of the x-ray and his guess of high bone density. So we talked about it and will go with a root canal on Monday and we’ll follow it up with a crown when the dentist is free.

I’ve had multiple root canals - definitely not fun. At one point I was so frustrated with having to go the dentist multiple times for each root canal, that I mentioned the extraction option to my dentist. He didn’t think it was a good idea. I mentioned that G. Washington had extractions and false teeth. His response was that Washington was miserable after that and wished he still had his teeth.

I had a bunch of amalgam fillings replaced with porcelain onlays and that was a lot of time at the dentist but 10 years later I’d say that the investment was worth it. Performance of the new technology (for back then) has been very good. I’m assuming that the technology to do root canals is improving on a regular basis.

After this root canal will be a crown and probably several fillings and maybe another crown. It feels good to clean up all of this stuff though it will mean some pain next year.

One thing about the current economic downturn is that it has been much easier to schedule dental work. When the economy turns back up, I think that dentists (and other medical professionals) will be inundated with work to fix the problems (and compounded problems) resulting from the lack of preventive care.

why you ask?
From my experience, Fat fingers in a small mouth is not fun. Fat fingers in a Big Mouth is better. But to be safe, check if the foot fits comfortably. :)

I’d try a root canal before an extraction. I’ve heard it’s much less painful than the rumors say, mostly because they were started back in the 70’s when they really did hurt.

Man…I have to go the dentist next week. I have three holes in teeth now and a forming cavity.

I hate my teeth. I hate them.

The worst thing is that both my lateral incisors and my right canine are the ones with the holes…

Stupid sugar…stupid f----ing sugar! Decalcifying my teeth! I hate you! -head desks-
