Rosacea?

A red, bulbous nose is one of the effects that men see more than women. I have noticed that, as I age, the pores on my nose get larger and larger - not quite a strawberry, but more like one than I would like.

Even when I was younger, after a workout at the gym, someone would ask me if I was okay because my face was so red. I think it looked like it was going to burst. The flushing like that is what causes the broken capillaries but I didn’t know then to limit that as much as possible. For those young ones out there with the beginnings of rosacea, do what you can to control those intense flushing episodes.

I had rosacea for a while when I was at the height of menopausal changes. I did whatever treatment the dermatologist recommended until it ran out, and then I stopped–too annoying and too expensive. I found that if I used NO soap or makeup, along with a zinc-oxide based diaper rash cream at night (Burt’s Bees is my favorite), that I had no problem at all.

Cartera, are you saying that working out –> flushing –> broken capillaries, so therefore don’t work out??

Can I ask? How much do the lazer treatments cost? i have no idea. My roseacea was worst when I was young and tanning alot. Now I cover up and I use a makeup that really improved my appearance. It the bare mineral stuff. Made a huge difference. However, I do have problems with the broken capillaries around the nose.

The cost for mine was $500CAD (about $400USD) each laser session or $2000CAD (~ $1600USD) for a package of five. They suggested I needed about five for my case (it varies).

This was at a clinic owned by a board certified dermatologist whose role was to meet with me, do an initial diagnosis, checked on the progress, but who outsourced the actual lazer tx appointments to her employees.

VeryHappy - that would be a good excuse I guess, but what I found to help was having a cool cloth with me for my face or a spray bottle to spritz my face while I work out. Working out inside in air conditioning when possible would help too.

What was the makeup? Metrogel seemed like a miracle cure for maybe a year for me. Then I had to add antibiotics and when I discontinued them, the rosacea came back worse than ever. I added them on again, but one can’t live on antibiotics forever!

I had red to purple veins on my cheeks and nothing really helped. I used the Metro gel for years. One Derm gave me a 45 day supply of tetracycline and that cured my irritable bowl but not the rosesea. Finally I met a GP doc and she was starting to use the laser for skin treatments. I had three treatments and I can say I no longer get stopped by security for being “red faced mad”. Before the laser treatments I had to use a make up green stick that theaters use to block out the red and purple. Then after laser I can cover with normal mineral makeup.
I was not ever going to give up my Indian food, caffiene, red wine, or anything
else.

The make-up that helped me was Bare Minerals. That stuff they sell on TV. I couldn’t make myself buy anything on an infomercial so I had to wait till they open that make up store that sells only makeup and every brand you can think of. They had it so, I tried it and it really cleared my skin up. Everything they said on TV was true for me. (I have big pores so makeup really messes with my skin.) The other things that really help my skin was staying out of the sun and using a high SPF everyday.

I doubt we have a makeup store like that in VT, artmommy. I’ll try looking online.

Are you talking about Sephora?

ArtMommy, my laser treatments will be $300 per session. I was told it might require three to four sessions, so $900 to $1200. I haven’t had any sessions yet.

You can get Bare Minerals at Sephora, they also have other mineral types of make up in other brands

Good lord, I’ve never heard of Sephora. I’m going to try Proactive products.

You can order from Sephora on-line. Here’s the link.

I think Costco carries something close to a ‘bare minerals’ line, and I think you can get it from their website.

I’ve seen Bare Minerals at Ulta.
