I didn’t retake them, but I guess I had no plans of applying to Ross until like February. I seriously would recommend taking classes that pertain to her major. Don’t take classes just cuz you want to get in the B-school, cuz if you don’t, that might put you a year behind in your major. In your daughter’s case, I think it would be much more impressive if she moved ahead, and takes the next level of econ and calc.

Yeah, its not a good idea to retake them if you have AP credit. It might even look like she’s just retaking it to get an “easy A” for material she already knows. Higher level/more difficult classes would look great on the bschool app too.

The next step for econ 101/102 (micro/macro) would be 401/402. Those courses are notoriously difficult and many econ majors struggle to get a decent grade in them. I’d recommend taking some 300-level econ electives (many of which will be an easier A than 101/102) – 398 (strategy) is a good one.

As for calc, she should be taking Calc III if she got a 5 on the calc BC AP.

jnpn,

Thanks for the suggestion on the econ 300-level electives. It sounds like a good idea.

She is not expecting a 5 on the calc BC AP, but likely a 4. What then?

I looked up the course schedules and all the 300 level Econ classes are taken!!! There are quite a few spaces left in the 400 level classes, but most of them are taught by Kuhn (really bad teacher based upon the comments on ratemyprofessor.com).

The way it works is if she gets a 5 she gets credit for Calc I and Calc II. If she gets a 4, she gets credit for Calc I only. So if she does end up with a 4, then she should start out in Calc II.

Yeah when I wanted them they were filled also. You just need to frequently check for openings on wolverine access – one will open up.

Hopefully during the first week of the semester a lot of people will be dropping out of certain classes. I really want to take Econ 302 - Money and Banking.

You don’t need to wait until school starts. People switch in and out of classes during the summer. Half my classes freshman fall I got from spots opening up in August.

My orientation isn’t until August 28th. Before that date I can’t sign up for classes.

Thanks for symphathy. I just wanted to illustrate how difficult it can be – esp with prior posters indicating, “don’t worry about 3.2.” My son had an especially bad econ TA. I think he actually had one of the highest grades in the class/section – but everyone in the section was confused compared with other sections. So my advice would be – if you think your TA is lousy, find another section. There could be lots of reasons why he wasn’t accepted - they may want geographic diversity and we’re in-state. Or too many people in his major. Who knows.
