Rsi 2013

darn i should give up hopes of being accepted now right

@ jokolomo
I prefer not to post a ‘laundry list’ of my stats but I will say that I had a few years of research experience and won awards in a few science-fair type competitions. I’m almost certain, though, that a major role was the way in which I approached my essays - I wrote nearly a page and half on question 3 (about research questions) since I chose questions that I was researching concurrently and had already developed some ideas as to approach them. I made sure to convey my passion for the subject, and was extremely specific about the research topics. It seems that there’s really no limit to the depth of your questions/analysis- I pursued a really obscure topic but made sure to relate it back to real-world applications. I started my essays over winter break, but I did put in a good deal of effort.
Though my primary subject was CS, I wrote barely a paragraph for the programming question - I guessed it was more of a gauge of skills than anything else, so that was rather dry.
In all, though, my prose was extremely informal and conversational; at one point I actually started talking about experiences in elementary school. I also wrote only a little about the non-science ECs, but the ones I mentioned were that really mattered to me. In this respect, I’m really glad they let us use an “achievement sheet” for the rest- it really helped me condense the essays. Sorry for the long post

Those all those who got accepted, enjoy your summer in MIT. Please take a moment to inform other programs that you have applied to that you won’t be considering those ( assuming you are off to RSI ). That’s the only way you can help those who are still looking for summer programs. That would be the best thing you can ever do :-)

Accepted! Wow! I simply cannot explain how delighted I am to have received this invitation. I am so humbled and eager to meet all the other students who were accepted in June. For those of you who were not accepted, I encourage you to not lose hope. You are all so inspiring, and at the end of the day, it is tough to understand what exactly RSI is looking for. If someone could PM me the link to the Facebook group, I would greatly appreciate it!!

I did not apply to any other summer programs. Best of luck!!

Accepted!
Could someone also PM me the facebook link?

hey, anyone know how many applicants there were?

hi everyone! congratulations to those accepted. has anyone else NOT heard back yet? because i am getting a little worried

@cat12334 - Check the primary email that you included in your application. The email will be from ‘Jackie Ortiz’.

Thanks for the advice Hoctopi. Nothing from Jackie Ortiz. any suggestions?

For future applicants, I would recommend that the research questions you pose relate to work that you have actually done either in a research lab or at school - draw from your own experiences and delve further to find questions that actually make you curious. They shouldn’t be out of the clear blue. Hope that helps! :)

^ I did that and I was waitlisted ._.

Anyone from Maryland?

@mnutmeg, which category did you choose?

Those who got accepted, please let us know the category and the state you are from ?

Can’t agree more. There are at least 2950 people who don’t have the good fortune to rejoice in admission today, so while you accomplished folk look forward to this summer, please do everyone who did not get in a huge favor and withdraw other applications, assuming you are set on RSI.

It would be great if we maximized the number of us science-passionate students who have the opportunity to do something great over the summer, whether it be at programs such as RSI or at small-time regional internships. And, of course, congrats to everyone!!

Bioengineering>Neuroengineering
Computer Science>Computer-Human Interaction

My son was accepted too. From California. Please send me the Facebook link, and I would let him know. Congratulations to all accepted too.

I’m a proud reject but I was just wondering, doesn’t this program give an advantage to those in higher-income families since it doesn’t ask for family income.

I know several local students accepted recently and this year. I don’t know how they wrote their research topics or assay. One thing in common is they all rankesd top 50 or 20 in some national competition such as USAMO or Chemistry. But, there are also student in the national top 20 range, with published research paper being rejected.
