Rsi 2013

@shinexalive no jokes then. it’s good that we know each other or this would be awkard lol
Anyhow I would have loved to superscore for my math part, but it says to scan your score report in and copy it… so… I have no hope. I am just submitting my PSAT because WHOO was my SAT score lower. I am guessing you can just submit one. I hope. (also, I am including my AP score, which isn’t impressive, since I’ve only taken one haha)

@AmaranthineD, go for it. If you don’t get in, you don’t get in. If you have the time and resources, go for it.

Question guys: on the sheet of paper you’re supposed to turn in, are you supposed to have both awards AND activities? The site just says awards. But if I listed activities, my essays would be shorter and more concise… Also, can we print double-sided? Silly questions, but necessary ones. Thanks!

Dang @WeIsCool, I’m not even close to printing mine o.0 XD werk them apps

At WIC…I think they just want academic and non-academic awards in this section. Two of the essay questions asks about science and nonscience ECs and activities.

I’m extremely late to this as I have been really busy with school and dem RSI essays (so much work and weariness). But @WeIsCool - at least you HAVE your PSAT scores. We don’t even have ours at our school yet. That or my school is sadistic and doesn’t want to give them to us. I wouldn’t be surprised by either.

@Mentonin - I’m only applying this year, but there’s no REASON not to apply, I’d say. Because if you have other accomplishments in science and math that offset the scores, then they’ll understand. Even otherwise, I wouldn’t hesitate to apply. Let the essays and teacher recs work their magic; I feel like those are definitely the most important parts.

Wish me luck, guys, starting my last two essay questions now. And good luck to all of you as well!

A quick note: probably too late right now, but any future people reading here (like I was a few months ago…): Hit your teachers early for rec letters, especially if there’s one teacher you REALLY want a good one for. They’ll probably have a lot of college app rec letters to worry about. Also, if you have anyone else at your school doing the same… well, there you go. I know I did this with my teacher, and that definitely leaves a good impression, as opposed to the people who came up to them last week: ā€œOh hey, Mr. (insert generic name here; I’ll use Smith) Smith. Can you write a rec letter for me for a summer program? It’s due in a month, so could you get it to me before/during winter break? Thanks so much!ā€ = ā€œOh hey, Mr. Smith. Can you steal time away from everything else to do this rec letter for me on such short notice? It’s due in a month, so could you also please hurry? Thanks so much!ā€ I had 3 people at my school do this for my physics teacher that I hit in October for the letter, and I could see the burning annoyance in his eyes (maybe exaggerating, but…).

@MrMonday not everyone is applying to rsi, and some rec letters aren’t due until march, so just calm down ok? you post seems more like a rant/hate letter than ā€œadvice.ā€ also, doesn’t school like start in september? he probably didnt get creeped out at aaalllllllll lololololololololol. also, im pretty sure actually being there to witness people asking for rec letters is super creepy. I heard mr. smith doesn’t liek creepers.XDXDXDXDXD
@weiscool im ur number 1 fan, you go girl,
your friend,
James

For those of you who have filled out the application…
The section that asked for course level states, for example,
Chemistry: _Regular _Honors _College

Does RSI consider AP Chemistry a ā€œHonorsā€ level or ā€œCollegeā€ level?

@4bear, I’d guess Honors…College courses are well, really college courses.

@4beardolls, I indicated APs as ā€œcollegeā€ last year, but I doubt it makes much of a difference either way, given that they will have your actual transcript.

also in regards to the PSAT. Its okay if your school doesn’t send them on time (but try to). Mine sent my tenth grade scores instead of the eleventh grade ones, and Maite allowed me to resend them.

Lol my gc folded my unofficial transcripts and RSI is apparently kind of picky about that. Too lazy to ask her to reprint them, she’s got enough on her plate. Anyways, thanks for clearing up the extracurriculars question guys  Did any of your teachers ask you specifically what you wanted to put into your letter? I thought one of my teachers would write me a really good one, but she just asked me for my resume so she can put some of that stuff in, and then she’s asking now for specific ā€œindependent learning instancesā€ like the teacher form tells her to list. Of course I am grateful that she’s taking the time to write it and stuff, but should she be focusing more on specific classroom instances or what?

I had no prior knowledge of this summer program until I got an e-mail it about recently. How competitive is the applicant pool?

*For those who have attended in the past, what was your experience in the program?

@LiliaBella - I’ve been told it’s so competitive just apply with the expectation of not getting in. That way you won’t be disappointed if you don’t get in but, if you do get in, you’ll be super excited :). People who’ve said they’ve gone say it is truly an amazing experience and it has definitely helped them to advance their research in high school/college.

@laurab1220 Thanks! That’s something to definitely keep in mind. It seems extremely competitive, but I guess it’s worth a shot and the program sounds REALLY beneficial! At least you can say you applied :)

@mitrsibound - I’m pretty sure that’s true. Mr. Smith probably doesn’t like creepers. :D

Anyway… you realize this is an RSI thread? So most of the people here are either applying right now, or have already applied and are graciously helping us poor people out (thanks to all of you who do that! You’re the best, rickoids!). So… yeah, everyone here has some connection to RSI.

School started in early august for me. Don’t know where you are or where you go, so it might be different for you. Not sure why he’d get creeped out; explain? I mean, I think I understand that you mean that it might seem weird that I’m already asking, but… not sure if it’s creepy. Also, kind of hard to not see people asking for rec letters when they do it hurriedly right before class starts (or even after class started…). If being in class on time makes me a creeper, then I guess I’m a creeper all day every day!

Not entirely sure why you’d say it sounds like a rant/hate. Wasn’t really either (or at least wasn’t meant to be; sorry if it came across like that).

Do I know you, mitrsibound? It seems weird that you’d read that post and then go and make an account just to respond to that one post. Almost as if you’re the creepy stalker here (and if you’re wondering how I know you made the account two days ago, it says ā€œAccount created - Dec. 2012,ā€ and it seemed at least a little suspicious that your account was created this month and only had 1 post. Your profile gives the exact date, fyi. Incidentally, liking the name!

@LiliaBella - I think it’s a <5% acceptance rate for the program. It’s REALLY competitive, which is why I honestly don’t expect to get in. But I know that at least the 50 people (from the US, at least) that do get in have a lot of fun and learn a ton, so no reason not to apply! Also, getting in looks amazing on college apps (most everyone goes to the big universities), so if you get in, there’s also that. Plus, and I’m not 100% sure about this, but if I’m not wrong, you get a published research paper? Not fully clear on that. But that’s a real leg up in college if you actually end up doing research because then you already know the format for writing one and you already have established yourself, which just makes everything that much easier.

@MrMonday, you get a published paper if your prof deems you worthy, I think  Like if you helped a lot on a project and they were close to publishing a paper when you joined the team, then your name will be mentioned! You could always write your own too, but to me personally it is cooler when your name is listed under a professor, I don’t know. Like when I did my research thingy this past summer, my lab group was years away from publishing another paper, so… yeah… no published papers for me. Maybe I’ll try to put my abstract into a few publications? I am not sure as of now.

Who got their PSATs back yet? :)

Does the app make anyone else feel worse about themselves? I take the hardest classes offered to me at prep school but that leaves so many blank spots for aps and the computer science part of my app is empty. I have published papers and have lots of research experience but I feel like I have no chance of rsi since my application looks so empty!

^^ yesssss. I take the hardest curriculum our school has ever seen in its entire history… still empty. WHY

I concur that my app feels so hollow. I have (literally, if I don’t put really minor awards) no academic achievements. I’m getting my SAT back in a week and my PSAT back in January (because my school is… yeah I don’t know).
I’m also not sure what to do about rec letters; I’m taking AP Bio, AP Chem, and AP Calc BC this year but none of those teachers really know me. I don’t make myself stand out, and I have low to mid As for lack of studying. I read that both letters have to be from science or math teachers on their website: is this a guideline or a rule? One of my athletic coaches could probably write me a good letter, but I’m not so sure about RSI in particular.

Does RSI look at PSAT scores closely ? Do you have to get 240 in PSAT to get in ?
