The University of Iowa does not have a soccer team, I’m always astonished to know a Big Ten school ( IOWA) does not have a soccer team besides a traditional team IOWA students play against each other.
Watching college rugby today, I always question why Iowa does not have a rugby team besides traditional team where Iowa students play against each other. Nonetheless I do know that Iowa City have rugby(s) team and Iowa City was recently designted as Iowa soccer capital. So how true is it, Iowa is missing a soccer and rugby team?

I believe any other sports would be a club team (in addition to intramural sports, of course). Club sports can be quite high-level, yet are not as demanding on the student athlete in terms of commitment. Of course the club sport athletes do not get university support either, so it is really more for fun.

It is not unusual for schools to not have all sports, as they are quite expensive (scholarships, coaches, and facilities are all needed), and there are a lot of NCAA sports. For example, many schools do not have ice hockey, men’s volleyball, lacrosse, rowing, etc. Iowa seems to have women’s soccer but not men’s soccer.

I just checked the UIUC web site…looks like UIUC does not have men’s soccer, men’s volleyball, rowing (Iowa does have rowing), Ice hockey, either. Similar limited list for Purdue. I think Iowa has at least as many sports as these schools, if not more. Ohio State’s list in longer. I did not check the others.

UIUC does not have mens’ swimming either, it got cut several years ago for gender equity and financial reasons. I would guess Iowa doesn’t have mens’ soccer for the same reason. UIUC doesn’t have rowing primarily because there is no place to row. Both Iowa and Illinois have more womens’ varsity sports than mens’, most likely because of gender equity reasons. I think the gender equity has more to do with money than # of athletes, but I’m not sure.

Ha ha, rwe, I wouldn’t want to be on the Boneyard, the rats would be trying to climb aboard. (Actually, the Boneyard has been spiffed up quite a bit since I saw rats in it.)
