Rutgers C/O 2021 Admissions/Discussion

@Kenchan24 That was the case with my son last year. Couldn’t believe he didn’t get a cent. He ultimately went Ivy since he got nothing from RU. I was scathing in the questionnaire they send to people who decide against Rutgers.

@Kenchan24 You are right on the money (no pun intended) with your comments. The whole college admission/merit granting process is very unfair. When other factors (race, religion, culture) are allowed to be taken into consideration ( as the Supreme Court decided recently) the students of the more successful tiers will suffer. Some parents of exceptional students will subsidize other kid’s educations. I am not saying this is right or wrong - it is just the way of the world.

In any event, Rutgers is a good school, but not exceptional by any means. With good stats, most parents will find that their kids can get a much better education for similar or less elsewhere. If more parents refuse to pay in full for their 1500 SAT kid, things may change in the future. Vote with your $$$ is my best advice.

@Ceciliaagnes last week when I got my invitation I asked if honors college admitees get some for of scholarship and they said

“All Honors College invited students do receive some level of merit scholarship. You will receive your merit scholarship and FAFSA aide information by the end of the month. Please let us know if you have any other questions in the meantime.”

@Baxter and @DemonDad

Good points. I am not feeling lonely now. :slight_smile:
Thanks.

I am confused as to the fact that on the RU website it says total tuition (room + board) is around 26K. However in the emails sent out today, the initial prices were around 32-33K before aid. Can anyone explain the difference? I thought tuition and room and board were defined as one price for everyone.
(In-state prices btw)

@nygiants1999 The $26K is for commuters. The $33K is for living on campus.

I called a different school about this - There’s additional factors aside from Tuition, Room and Board and student fees. The higher number includes books, and other non-billable expenses. It’s similar to a cost of attendance number — books, anticipated personal expenses, etc.

only received one direct federal loan - unsubsidized at all three campuses. Rutgers has been basically pushed out of consideration because i can go to several other colleges for under $40k.

Is a “direct federal loan” supposed to be considered an “Award”? I don’t think so. Call a loan a loan and don’t stick it on an Awards page.

Has anyone who’s already received their financial award gotten a grant yet? Or do those not come out til later?

@Trollair

I haven’t received my ‘awards’ yet, but I completely agree with what you’ve written. I’ve been so disappointed with Rutgers’ decisions, and my hopes for a scholarship are probably setting me up for some more disappointment and frustration.

@Fishnlines29 wait i thought it costed around $14,010 in state for commuters unless they have raised it???

Has anyone been able to log in only using their RUID? I did not submit a FAFSA so I need to use the last 4 digits of my RUID to log in however its not working?

you’re supposed to use your whole RUID, not just the last four digits

@Hasanh No panic, commuting is not 26K! @newtothismom is correct. The 33K is an all in number. The rules (not sure whose rules) require schools to estimate miscellaneous expenses such as transportation and incidentals. Tuition and fees is about 14.5K and board for NB is about 12.5K. Books are 1.5K and the transportation and misc estimate is about 4K. This 32-33K The books, transportation, and misc are estimates and are not paid to the school. All-in commuter probably shows as about 20K. I think it is a good thing as years ago I had a friend who had a full scholarship to our college, but never had a dime for pocket money!

Invited to the Honors College through SAS, & got the Trustee! 2270 SAT, 3.85 UW, state-level awards, solid (but not super impressive) ECs. I didn’t expect anything more and I’m really excited to have Rutgers as an option!

@DemonDad @steelersseven We are in state. My son received the National scholar commended award but we didn’t know until after we summited the ED app. He only had 1 leadership position, a lot of community service through Boy Scouts and the Police explorer program. I’m sure all the students who received large merit awards worked very hard and I send out congratulations to them. My son enjoys his down time. And his essay was not impressive. So I am happy he received something at this point. Didn’t know how competitive Rutgers was until I saw the other stats on here. Rutgers was the only school he applied to.

@Trollair The Pell Grant is the free federal financial aid which is based on your family income.
Most Pell Grants are awarded to students whose families make less than $30,000 annually
Some Pell Grants are awarded to students whose families make between $30,000 - $60,000 annually
It’s possible, but rare, for students to be awarded the grant if their families make more than $60,000 annually. You must be in high income category i.e. likely more than $60,000 annually.

@Hasanh Well the numbers we were discussing are COA “Cost of Attendance” So they come up with estimates of living expenses even when you are a commuter. So yes, $14,567 is the number for tuition and fees, but below you will find what they estimate your living expenses to be even while home (so an extra $3K) PLUS what it will cost you to buy textbooks, miscellaneous expenses and your actual travel/commute expense (gas, wear and tear on your car).

Tuition + Fees + Room and Board is estimated at: $27,323 for living on campus and $17,693 for commuters.

Books + Travel + Misc is estimated at: $5,326 for living on campus and $7,581 for commuters

For people who didn’t get into the Honors College, what did it say? It still says “no record available” for me.
