re post # 16. I found the locking function to be brand specific- it won’t vary among styles in a product line. Something to investigate- try things out in a store display.
Having locks, alarms and security systems is a good idea. But- USE them. Lock windows and doors. Set your alarms and pay that monthly monitoring fee.
btw- be sure to lock car doors even in your closed garage. Put stuff away- inside. Good neighborhoods are where thieves look for worthwhile stuff to steal.
Each brand has multiple product lines with different functionality. For example, with doorknob or lever latch sets, both Kwikset and Schlage offer the following functionality (among others):
- No lock ("hall and closet").
- Lockable, key only to unlock from the outside ("keyed entry").
- Lockable, key or combination to unlock from the outside.

It is possible that you were in a store that had limited selection of product lines for each brand.
Of course, the lockable ones are generally considered low security, so having a deadbolt (with strongly anchored reinforced strike plate) in addition makes the door more resistant to forced entry, even though low security locks do keep out the lazier and less skilled thieves who only go through unlocked doors.
Yes, agree that locks and other security devices like alarms and/or cameras that you have need to be used. Unlocked doors are common ways for thieves to enter, since they require the least effort and skill of the possible ways of entry.
