And here’s the experience of profit-generating online program at Arizona State

“ASU Online, a division of the university, has expanded its operations in the past two years, reaching out to more students and generating an estimated $6.2 million in profit, or net revenue, this fiscal year. By 2020, early projections show ASU Online could reap as much as $200 million in profit, or the equivalent of about 7 percent of the university’s total revenue.”

I could go on. But I think you get my drift :)

BTW, I don’t see online courses as some kind of a savior for universities. But it’s one example of public universities trying creative ways to generate money to make up for cutbacks in state funding. Some of these attempts will be more successful than others. But that doesn’t mean that schools nationwide aren’t focusing a lot of time, intelligence and ingenuity trying to remain academically and economically viable. If we want to remain an academic world power, we should all encourage and applaud these efforts.
