Sanctuary Cities Feel That Federal Law Enforcement Is Optional

About Kathryn Steinle, the 32 year old victim. Shot at 6:30pm. randomly in a very touristy spot.

Money talks. If tourists stop coming to SF, maybe they will get the message.

This thread was head of the curve.

It is amazing how many bigwigs who are now coming out against sanctuary cities. There is a point where people are going to say enough is enough, and they are not going to sacrifice their families in the name of some pie in the sky policies. About time.

The data that really brings the point home is as simple as 37% of all federal sentences in prison is, guess, what, the sentencing of illegal aliens. The question is why the heck should our hard-wrokng families have to put up wit that crap, even though illegal represent only 3% of the population. Yeah, sanctuary cities and ICE, thanks for making the average Americans’ lives worse, when if you did your job, these people would not be here in the first place.

The incompetent and the arrogance of these govt officials is astounding. I never understand what people think is the upside of declaring themselves a sanctuary city. If you were a criminal, illegal alien, where would you go? Why would anyone in their right mind want to attract that to their city? Perhaps the key phrase is, “right mind”. I don’t know why the federal government doesn’t make a bigger fuss about it. How about, you don’t follow the law, you don’t get federal funding for anything?

Yes, #21 is right. Even if the immigration violations are removed from the federal sentencing statistics, illegal aliens still commit a disproportionate number of crimes. And those stats don’t include state crimes. I really do not understand why any politician would favor those who are not citizens and criminals to boot.

What about “sanctuary schools” that knowingly enroll illegal immigrants.

Do you mean k-12 public schools or post-secondary institutions?

Post secondary institutions that post admissions instructions online specifically for illegal aliens

This thread is bordering on political, so I hope it is not shut down. Many on this thread think that there is no outrage similar to other threads. I’m sure most are saddened by slaying of this young woman. Unfortunately, random crimes like this happen on a daily basis, mostly with US citizen as the perpetrators. While I feel bad for folks that cross our borders illegally, the law should apply, especially when they have committed crimes multiple times. I do feel differently about kids who were brought here by their parents who know of no other country other than the US.

The larger is issue is how can a nation so powerful not have a secure border? How was he able to re-enter so easily multiple times? While Mexicans and other south of the border are the bulk of illegals, there are plenty of others that are here illegally as well. Plenty of folks from Europe and elsewhere come on visas, and let them expire.

Lastly I will say, dont think this is just a “liberal” issue. Both sides are disingenuous. If the US wanted to stop the bulk of illegal immigration they would implement -E-Verify, and as you can see that hasnt happened. The Dems love the votes, the Rep’s love the cheap labor. Congress has managed to pass some inane things in my opinion, and if they were serious they would take this up, but they are not. People should not be rewarded for breaking the law, but the reality is no one is going to ship them out.

Illegal immigration and the problems caused by illegal immigration are taboo subjects because anyone who talks about illegal immigration is immediately labeled a racist.

You think that’s more hypocritical than focusing on a case like this while not complaining about our outrageously lax gun laws?

See, anybody can use the “why do they complain about this issue, but not that one?” construction.

@hunt not the same at all! Not enforcing laws is very different than changing laws.

The examples in the first post aren’t really the same, either. It’s just a rhetorical device that, frankly, tires me.

Why so? Both are examples of local officials choosing which laws they will follow and which they won’t.

There’s no difference between:

  1. You have to issue licenses and perform ceremonies for SSM. It is the law. And the clerk says "naw, I don't wanna, and I'm not gonna"
  2. You have to be in the country legally. If you are here illegally and get caught committing a crime the law says you are to be turned over to ICE. And, the city/major/police department says 'naw, we don't wanna and we aren't gonna'.

Don’t we where that results in becoming tired.

Hmmm. Here’s an article about this case–from Fox–in which I can find no suggestion that the city violated any law, but simply that it failed to cooperate with federal authorities. I didn’t find anything about such state or city laws or practices being struck down by judges as inconsistent with federal law. Rather, I see a lot of reports about state legislatures trying to change them.

So perhaps the two scenarios aren’t the same at all.

ICE holds are federal court orders. They are binding on the state institution holding the prisoner. A sanctuary city’s failure to honor an ICE hold is more than merely ignoring a federal law - it’s contempt.

Hmmm…I guess there is a difference. When a clerk refuses to perform a SSM ceremony, no one dies.

Here’s another difference: at least some of those clerks who refused to issue marriage licenses to SSM couples were willing to forfeit their job for their beliefs. That kind of civil disobedience is as old as Ralph Waldo Emmerson. I don’t agree with them, but I can respect their willingness to quit a job rather than performing a task they believe violates their religious or ethical beliefs. On the other hand, I’m not aware of any sanctuary city officials that have quit their jobs over the city’s policy not to honor ICE holds. Their civil disobedience doesn’t come with a willingness to accept the consequences.

It’s a strange world when govt officials are prevented from doing the job they were hired to do. Our cities are going to get very dangerous with all the illegals bringing their gang activity with them through our porous border. This guy made it back again and again with no consequences and now a family is heartbroken.

I wondered how many sanctuary cities there are, and came across this list: http://www.apsanlaw.com/law-246.List-of-Sanctuary-cities.html
